This article helped me to understand how graphic design and visual communication and time are connected. To learn and to understand that a graphic design can have an effect on someone in an instant or over time is amazing. I never thought when i looked at a poster or advertisement on a bus and how quickly it would catch my attention or how i would look at a billboard or building design and take my time to look but looking back at the some of the things I’ve seen there is definitely a connection. This also connect to the typefaces used for these graphic pieces. Every typeface has a certain personality behind it and can definitely alter how a person views a graphic design. Some typeface can have a loud and aggressive personality and catch a person attention very quick, while some typefaces have more a quiet and smooth personality which can take some time to take in. This article was very informative and i enjoyed reading it!!

One question i would have for the author would be ” What advice would you have for someone who has an admiration for graphic design but may feel that they may not have the artistic or creative ability to be able to do graphic design”?. A possible answer may simply be ” You never know until you try, i believe everyone is born with an ability to be artistic and creative in different ways, its just a matter of taking the time to explore the type of style that you enjoy and have the most interest in and really take the time to study the works of other in that style as well as practicing that style as much as possible. “Most importantly of all be patient, you will fail before you succeed”.

Reading this article, I realize how important graphic design is. You don’t really realize it, but a lot of thought goes into a wrapper of a candy bar, or a logo of a company. And being such a visual society, people are able to differentiate companies just from one symbol. Design is literally everywhere, and it plays such a big part in society. It’s a big business as well, like designing book covers. If the book cover already doesn’t stand out to someone, then more than not, they won’t pick up the book.  Different typefaces, fonts, colors, and sizes can instantly emphasis a simple emotion or word. Graphic designing is just a great way to portray to viewers what you want them to feel or attract the right people.

Something I would ask the author is if there is a high demand for jobs as Graphic Designers? In my mind, I have always known that “making it big” as a (fashion) designer is tough. I wonder if that is the same with graphics as well. I would think, in this time it would be in somewhat high demand. Since we are in such a digital world, everything requires a good visual presentation.

This article definitely opened up my mind on the different ways that graphic design, communication design, attributes to society. Whenever I’ve thought of graphic design, I’ve only assumed that it was only related to designing a webpage. However, this article helped me realize that there is SO much more to graphic design than that. It also opened up my narrow minded thinking of assuming that jobs within this field was limited to only one thing: a graphic designer. Knowing a friend who ended up pursuing a job as a graphic designer, I caught myself pondering upon the question of “what can you really do with graphic design?” Well, according to the article, there are tons of jobs available. This article definitely broadened my spectrum of what a graphic design major can pursue to do.

A question that I wanted to ask the author while reading this article is if she thinks that it would be a safe route in pursuing a career in the graphic design department. I think the answer would be yes, in that there are so many job opportunities available in the department, and so many varieties too!

Graphic Design before the reading for me was basically a format that allowed an individual to express creativity through the usage of digital technology. But there is actually more to graphic design than virtual communication, it can also be communication through physical forms. Graphic design allows artist to communicate feeling and meanings through logos, packaging, advertisement, posters and etc. When types cannot simply get messages across, a graphic designers role is to elaborate them and create the whole package. Graphic design connects people and thoughts together, and brings out curiosity and interest through different forms of communication. It helps capture the attention of the eye and mind.

A question I have for the author is, “would you recommend graphic design to students with artistic abilities but unsure of their creative abilities?”

I think that everything is always worth a try, even if it’s hard to step out of your comfort zone. It is always hard to get yourself to do something when you have a lot of self doubt. But you’ll have to try something before making a clear judgement that you think like it. One thing to remember is that people work at different pace and levels, so stop comparing yourself and believe that you are creative enough. If you put in the effort, the effort will show.

My major at Baruch is Graphic Communications so I found this article to be very helpful. The article made me think about how important visual communication can be. We see design all around us in posters, advertisements, logos, websites, and even stamps. Design is also in the layout of books and magazines. Often I feel that people forget that these things are also part of design and when they think of design they think of fine art such as paintings or drawings. This article also reminded me of how important type design can be.  Typefaces have different personalities and styles which portray different ideas in design. Changing a typeface can have an impact on the overall outcome of a design.

I have two questions that I would ask the author. My first question would be “what is a good way to get creativity flowing in a project?” A possible answer is make sure that you are focused on just that one project and just sit and start brainstorming and sketch as many ideas as you can. Then see which one you think is best for the project. My other question would be, “what is a good typeface to have in your online portfolio?”  I think you should use a simple legible typeface. At the same time your portfolio should be eye catching.

The article, ”What is graphic design”, gave me a new perspective and understanding about graphic design. Graphic design uses visual and textual content to express ideas and experiences. I think graphic design is flexible and diverse after reading the article because the way of communicating design can be any forms. The purpose of design is varied. As well as the experience and the work can take place at any places any time.

My question to the author is that which one is more important between the visual effect and the content. It’s for sure that for a successful design, it cannot lose either one. However, I think the content, the idea that the designer wants to express is more important than the visual effect because graphic design uses visual content to express ideas. The purpose is to convey the designer’s idea.

The first paragraph basically tells us the definition of graphic design. I understand that graphic design is a practical and useful visual art that exists for a very long period. For a hundred years, from newspapers to websites, all kinds of design forms comes out, including images, words and graphics. Most importantly, the type design, which covers all the visual communication forms today. In every single graphic design pieces, you will see type design. So, to be more specifically, visual communication cannot communicate without type design.

My question to the author is that “Do I need a fine arts background to learn graphic design?” The possible answer I believe is “No, you do not need a drawing or painting background to do the visual design, but that defiantly will be a benefit if you know how to do fine arts.”

Graphic design is a general design that expresses ideas and experiences through visual and text content. So visual communication comes along with graphic design. These two together still get their messages across by having a appealing graphic. Visual communication uses a more larger scale of photography and presentations, while graphic design is more into digital and print media. this article made me understand the different types of graphics as well as the different types of designs that happens when designers do work.

My question is how do you decide on the visuals or text that expresses your message? We decide by researching and brainstorming on how we can send our message across and having the reader understand it well enough. We also have a expert in every meeting, but if not we have individuals that capable in different areas. Everyone comes with ideas that can help us build and that can help us create what we are doing. Everyone has a task, so it won’t be a empty room full of empty brains. We are all thinking.

Graphic design is a communication design. Communication is part of the most important thing between people. Not only language but also design. Especially Graphic design.The article forced me to understand more of the differences and option that graphic design.Graphic design is all around and is present in our everyday life. According to the article, graphic design is a broad idea of the career; however, it can be very precise in different positions. Such as motion graphics, environmental graphics, advertising for commercial, and typographic. Also, ” such as a business card, sign, logo, or an advertisement are individual expressions of design, how those are experienced together and over time is the design work.” That shoe the Graphic design is how important in our daily life. At first, I just think Graphic Design is just one type of design and it is about the word and picture design. Now I know it is really useful and includes small things like business card to the business logo. I believe it will be very interesting and I really want to find out more about it.

After reading the article, I ask a question about the people who do the graphic design. What is the most difficult part and challenge separate in the Graphic design? In my personal opinion, I think creativity is always the tough part of the designer. It is because a creative idea can totally change the message of the products. For example, advertisement in promoting value is very important. Like the design have to deign the most indelible logo to the customer and make the customers have a good feedback for a product. There is marketing in the promotion too. As a result, I think the most challenging part is the designer of the product design, and make the customers understand the meaning and love the design.

When I first chose graphic design as my future career path, I simply interpreted graphic design as design in business advertising. After I have done the research, I see graphic design is not merely use in Business, but in our everyday life. It can be defined as applied art, surrounding in our daily life. According to the article, graphic design is a broad idea of the career; however, it can be very specific in different positions. Such as motion graphics, environmental graphics, advertising for commercial, and typographic. Everything we have seen or use that involves graphic design. It does not just amaze me, but also gives me confidence to explore deeper in this career. Moreover, I see the importance of how art connect to our world. Without it, marketing is unable to be affective. A product with a attractive package can also be more desirable for the customers. Therefore, graphic designer plays a important role. Also, publish industries is associated with graphic designer as well. With a well layout and design, books and magazine, its popularity and attention will be increased by customers. So, graphic design is such an important role that people could not imagine.

After reading the article, I have few questions are ready to be answered. In graphics’ career, what is the key factor that affect promotion? Is it more base on designers’ creativity or the strategies that cause a product’s popularity from customers? In my personal opinion, I think talent in creativity is always the core in this career. A creative idea can change the message of a product. Creativity adds value to differentiate from a product with a well design and a product without any packaging. Even though strategies can also cause a good feedback for a product, the product has no value in it. A creative design or layout can give value to a product in order to catch customers’ eyeballs. As a result, I think creativity also brings up the value of being a graphic designer.
