Design Sample–Weikang Liang

This is a successful design because of its “E” and background. I focused on the red line of E at the first second. And then my vision expanded to the whole design. The conflict between black and white also worked well.

This is a successful design because there are four typefaces and four colors in this design. Its diversity of typefaces and colors made me look forward to experiencing the store.

I think it is a successful design. “Barber Shop” is obvious, and there are many flogs which are from different countries below the name. Moreover, the black and white logo makes the design more interesting.

I love this successful design because it looks perfect and energetic with the red text on the white background. It looks fashionable and attracts customers to shop inside.

This is a successful design. Its typeface is Bodoni which is my favorite typeface. As you can see, the last letter “E” of “ELITE” is reversed and it looks symmetrical. The most important reason why it is successful design is that it comes from a design firm.

Illustrated quote analysis—Weikang Liang

I choose the quote, “Just Do It,” which is the slogan of Nike. At the beginning, I did not know that I was not supposed to use the same logo as what Nike uses. Then I have to pick up a new one. And then I did some research in Google, and this baby really caught my eye and I loved the facial expression which can directly what I want to convey. During this project, I know seven contrasts which I used two of them. They are size contrast and direction contrast. I did struggle for how and where to put my quote in the picture. Brainstorming is really important but difficult for me because I am not that creative nor skillful with InDesign. I found that the longer the quote, the easier to deal with this project. My quote is too short to design. I did try to duplicate “Just Do It” many times and I found it was boring and bull. Thus, I duplicated the image once and made one upside down. And I made the quote in Bodoni to connect two fists of two babies which  showed the little boy’s determination. Action speaks louder than talking because talk is cheap.

Expressive word project–Weikang Liang

I really like this project because it was my first time using the InDesign to create my own expressive words. At the beginning, I thought it was easy to create expressive words in my own style. But after I made some of them, my brain was plain because I had no ideas what to create for the next few words. It was fun and enjoyable to select different styles in Helvetica and combine the letters in different ways.

For my expressive words, I used mostly Helvetica LT Std because I think it is straightforward and simple. I bolded them and made them larger. I think my best work is the last page of my pdf which I made romantic in a straight line. In my opinion, I agree that male’s romantic should be straight as a line.

What I learned from this project is that brainstorming is very important as a designer. And it is also very difficult to come up with favorite works. It is hard to create your own words in your own style because after seeing so many style of other works which are already impressive in your mind, you always want to copy them in different style. It is hard, but it is much interesting and proud to have your own designs.

Trace your name-Weikang Liang

In “Trace your name” assignment, I chose Bodoni. It is hard to explain why I like and choose Bodoni because I loved this typeface when I looked at it in the first time. I like the curve, shape, and style of Bodoni. For lower case letter i and j, I really like the dot of them because the dot looks like an eye of a baby. The tail of upper case letter Q is unique in Bodoni too. Comparing to other typefaces, the J in Bodoni has a the slightest hook. Even though Bodoni is not as popular as Helvetica, I like Bodoni’s different and special style.

From this project, I learned that hand-drawing was much difficult than tracing. For tracing, I just need to trace the outlines of the words and then fill them in with paint. But for free drawing, I need to pay more attention to the size and the shape of the words, and the space between two words is very important. It should not be too closed or to far away. Through this assignment, my patience was enhanced a lot because I made a lot mistakes.

What is Graphic Design–Weikang Liang

The definition of graphic design is generally broad. According to the article, “What is Graphic Design,” it is a creation of art and the visualization of thoughts. Graphic design could include images, words, or graphic forms. I think the main  purpose of graphic design is communication. Graphic designers try to express their thinking by designing whatever can bring out the point, such as posters, advertisements, brands, signs, logos, or packages. We are surrounded by graphic design every day. After reading this article, I know more about graphic design which includes user interface design, user experience design, and even type design.  There are also many different types of design jobs in the field. It is not easy to succeed in this field because it is hard to express and be accepted by others.

My question is that how much are the junior designer averagely paid annually. I know it is hard to tell because it depends on what company they work for. But I believe there is a round amount, and I want to know how much it is. I did some research; it says that it is around $25,000 to $49,500.
