Design Approach

The design approach I took was very simple. I started by creating a sketch on Animal Cruelty. I had my favorite sketch but there was another one that intrigue me. On paper it look weird and clutter but I wanted to give it a try. I started by creating different types of paws from different species. At the beginning it was random wild animals. After taking a look at it I decided to focus on animal extinction, therefore I trace paws of animals who are in critical endanger. Eventually I created different foot-print paths for the different species in danger. At the bottom of the bag I added a legend for people to be inform on the different types of animals who are nearly to be extinct.

After placing the foot-print paths on the bag, I added two quotes in each side of the bag. The first one reads “We deserve to have long lives too!” making an emphasis on deserve and making it look that the animals are talking to the customer. On the other side reads “We don’t want to be the past but the present!” making emphasis on the past, because we don’t want the animals to become history or to be gone forever.

The color model used in the bag is a 1-color model. I only used black and white but it doesn’t count as a color. I believe the design is very simple and has a modern look to it. The typeface use for this project is Futura. I think futura provides a modern look to the bag and adds to the design itself.

Creating this product helped me realize how much work it goes into packaging or product design based. Personally, I prefer to work with less rather with a lot. It is hard to find the right balance in order to provide a nice feeling to the product. This project has help me understand more in detail print-production.

Invitation

Design Approach;

Creating sketches helped me figure out and visualize the type of invitation I was going to create. However, before starting the invitation I did a little bit of research about the postal office. Having to know the minimum size of the invitation helped me come up with the fold. On the other hand, from one of the lectures we talked about di-cuts and it called my attention. Which is one of the reasons of why I decided to create a circle di-cut in the middle. Also, it provided a sense of sneak peak, the audience will be able to see only one part of the picture until they fully open the invitation.
The font that I decided to use is Futura, which is a very simple geometry san-serif. The other font I used was Bodoni-Italic which I think it gave a nice feeling since it is a serif typeface.

The color I decided to use for the postcard was Pantone 335; which is a nice green-turquoise plus black. Along the card I used different tints and mixes to give certain effects in one of the photograph. Also, for the front photographs I used duo-tone with the same color.

Paper;

If I were to pick my own paper I would choose Natural 80C, Smooth by Gilbert. I really liked that paper because it felt thick which will be important for my invitation not to get damage while it is carried by the USPS or any other mail service. Also, the color of the paper was more like “bone” color rather than completely white. I believe with that color it will helped my design pop-out.
Overall I am very excited to have the final product in my hands rather than just a digital copy.

Postcard Analysis

Design Approach:

The Design approach that I took was very simple since we were able to create sketches in advance.

For the Color One I created three different postcards; the first one is it very simple and only contain the Century Bold fond across the picture.
The Second was more simple, I decided to cropped the picture and flush-it-right with the word “SHADOW” in a vertical form utilizing the white space.
The third picture has a small crop and I flushed the word to the left-hand corner. Overall I played a lot with the spacing and the different types of fonts I used.

For the Duotone, I became a little more creative with it since I had some room to play with the different color mixes and tint. Also, it was very interesting to play with two-colors and making them look attractive to the eye.

For the CMYK, it was bit hard because I had 4-colors to work with. I was getting used to the idea of only utilizing 1 or 2 colors. However, I was able to create something interesting and a bit weird out of it, after playing around the the shape of the image.

What did I learn?

I was able to understand more about the relationship between color. I was able to see that I don’t need necessarily 4-colors in order to make the postcard look good. I was able to see that works/projects can become very unique and full of life by just using 1 or 2 colors. I liked working with restrictive colors!
