Gift Bag

Design Approach:

For this project i began simply by finding a movement that well moved me. This lead me focus on Black Lives Matter and so sparked an idea. It is minorities that go through this problem and so marketing to higher income citizens wouldn’t really benefit me a lot. I wanted to target people with an income around the ages of 18 – 50. This bag is meant to be more aggressive visually and be a symbol for minorities to rally behind. The first design item I worked on was the smaller side panels. Here I decided to stick with what cops who have shot a innocent person usually say. “I was scared for my safety I have to shoot”. Also for the larger panels I wanted an image that would depict the situation so I sketched up a few cops aiming a gun at a civilian with his hands up. I wanted to take a step further so on the opposite side of the bag I placed a a baby crawling with the hoard of cops aiming their guns at him. I felt for the bag to keep its consistency all visual elements show be silhouettes.

What I learned:

First thing I learned is how hard it is to make the bag work all around with no start and end. This was the most challenging part of it all. Secondly I learned how you have to really take your time with the blade or you will mess up or worse cut yourself. For the less technical things I learned was how sometimes being simple is better then having extremely loud design elements. Being loud is usually is my style so being able to take a step back now and be simple is really useful.

Typeface:

I used helvetica for my typeface.

Invitation

Design Approach:

Unlike the last project, for this one I really had to make sketches up. As soon  as the class learned about di-cuts I knew i wanted to use one. I had to in total make 3 sketches to visualize which images went where and how much text I wanted. After passing on the layout design to the computer I knew that before playing with the layout I had to make sure it would print properly. I have had to make brochures in the past so I knew that making sure it printed was extremely important. After this it was pretty easy. All I had to do was pass on the image and text I wanted and find the fonts that I would like to use. Franklin Gothic medium fit perfectly for the title and information and it really helped give my piece simplicity but a sort of drama. Then for the rest of the text I used Helvetica LT Std. After all of the came the color I would pick. I went with Pantone7543 C because i just like grayish and blueish colors. I would like to print this on Gilbert Realm brand paper. It has to be white, with 180c for the weight. Also I liked the super smooth for the texture style of the paper. It is a thick paper that would give my di-cut a more firm structure so that it doesn’t break off.

Postcard Analysis

Juan Pulla,

Design approach:

Grayscale: For the postcards that required being in grayscale my process was to sketch out possible designs. When it came to the nitty gritty and I had to actually design it on Ai I couldn’t get my ideas through. Thus I decided to restart and just place the image on the art-board and flow. As for the image color I would be using I just used my favorite color family with is the blues.

Duo-tone: After the grayscale I decided that I wouldn’t sketch out a design initially and could save time by breaking my head and designing it from thin air. Here it was more challenging to pick 2 colors that would mix and produce a happy result so I mixxed a grayish color with blue.

CMYK: After both of the other postcards I decided to just follow the same strategy and find results I enjoyed.

Growth:

Postcard Project:

Through all three postcard style I really learned how important it is to be able to use your image and space to pass on a message rather then relaying on fancy fonts to do the talking. I really enjoyed learning hot its actually all dots that are printed on the same paper with a slight shift that gives us printed images. Cropping the images was my favorite technique and it really make your design stronger. Finally how key it is to use correct color pallets and how you cant pass off a gradient as a duo toned image.
