Week 4 update

Week 4 update! 

I mentioned during our touch base I had a one on one today with Betsy Poirier, the VP of Marketing & Merchandising at Macy’s.  It was a great opportunity with a lot of insight.  Part of the conversation was focused on her career path and how she arrived at Macy’s.  I was very surprised to find she graduated with a dual major in English and Theater.  She later moved on to production for nonfiction television.  After much soul searching she decided to venture into retail and fell in love with the field.

I took the opportunity to share the details of my independent study project and some of what I was planning on incorporating.  She gave me lots of input in terms of branding and the digital market. I asked her who she considered was a great example to follow and who she considered needed to improve  on their online presence. So basically, the do’s and don’ts for a smarter online business. The top three examples to follow  she gave me were Sephora, Nordstrom and Anthropologie.  According to Betsy the key to a successful online experience depends on finding that perfect balance between what the customer needs and what they want. I also asked her what she considered was most important when selling your brand. Betsy believes knowing your audience is key, especially when you’re job hunting. When she is looking to incorporate a new member in her team she wants someone that is not only creative,  but that also has an understanding of the business.  So that’s my update for this week.
