Current Projects

  • NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) and The Earth Institute at Columbia University: Heat Awareness Survey (2013)

A telephone survey of 803 adult residents of New York City to evaluate public awareness of heat warnings and alerts, as well as current measures taken by respondents to prevent heat-related illness. This year’s survey asks about how concerned respondents are that climate change will affect their health.

  • FCC Pilot for Lifeline Broadband Surveys 2013-2014 (2013)

A baseline and follow-up online survey of broadband subscribers in Brooklyn, New York. The goal is to provide the FCC with the adoption rates of different Lifeline discount plans across Brooklyn.

Ongoing Projects

  • Baruch College, School of Public Affairs Staff Satisfaction Survey (2013)

An online survey of staff attitudes about work at Baruch College. The survey was designed and conducted in one week and data will be used to help improve the working environment on campus.

  • CUNYfirst (annually from 2008 – present)

A web-based survey administered to CUNY employees across all campuses as part of a large ongoing study to ascertain employee attitudes and satisfaction with the CUNYfirst system.

HEALTH

  • Long Island/Hudson Valley Smoking Survey (annually from 2008 – 2011, 2013)

An annual telephone survey of 2,438 (2013) residents in six counties across the Long Island-Hudson Valley region. Interviews were conducted in English and Spanish. Excluding 2008, surveys included a cell phone sample of each county. The study was designed to assess current smoking levels and to aid anti-tobacco organizations and the New York State Department of Health in determining awareness levels of the health effects of secondhand smoke.

  • NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) Clean Air Survey (2012)

A telephone survey of 1,200 NYCHA residents assessing attitudes towards smoke-free housing policies, experiences with transfer of second-hand smoke and smoking rules for their home.

  • NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) Heat Warning and Behavior Survey (2011)

A telephone survey of 712 adult residents of New York City that evaluated public awareness of heat warnings and alerts as well as current measures taken by respondents to prevent heat-related illness.

  • NYC DOHMH HIV Awareness Survey (2011)

A telephone survey of 2,473 adult New York City residents designed to assess awareness, attitudes and behavior related to HIV, HIV testing, and the New York City DOHMH’s HIV testing initiatives.

  • Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH)/New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Survey of the Aging Population (2009)

A telephone survey of 1,036 members of the NYCHA senior citizen population (65 years and older) on behalf of NYCHA and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Health.  Interviews were conducted in English, Spanish, Russian and Chinese. The survey was designed to learn more about the health and well-being of older residents in public housing and explored issues of health status, quality of life, medical conditions, mobility, and perceptions of safety.

  • Division of Behavioral Health – Kings County Hospital Center: Survey of the Employees (2009)

A paper survey for the Kings County Hospital Center to assess employee satisfaction and the effectiveness of hospital management systems. A focus group was conducted to assist in developing questions.

 

SAFETY

  • Baruch College New York City Poll: Policing, Protection, Profiling and Pat-Downs (2012)

A public opinion poll of 804 adult New York City residents conducted from February 28 – March 7. The poll was designed to gauge opinion on current issues of public interest concerning policing, protection, profiling, pat-downs and overall satisfaction with city services and quality of life. Based on the results, BCSR produced the second NYC SAT (Satisfaction, Approval, and Trend) score. The poll included a cell phone sample as well as interviews conducted in English and Spanish.   • NYC DOHMH Restaurant Program Evaluation Follow-up Poll (2012)

A poll of 511 adult New York City residents evaluating awareness and response to DOHMH’s NYC restaurant grading initiative to date.   • NYC DOHMH Restaurant Program Evaluation Poll (2011)

A poll of 502 adult New York City residents evaluating awareness and response to DOHMH’s NYC restaurant grading initiative. For results and more information, see the August 1st press release from the Mayor’s office.

  • CUNY Student Food and Housing Survey (2010)

A multi-mode survey of 1,086 CUNY undergraduate students investigating food and housing security as well as mental health issues. The survey was conducted online and over the telephone.

 

LABOR AND IMMIGRATION

  • Baruch College New York City Poll: Immigration, Labor Unions, and the State of the City (2011)

A public opinion poll of 1,207 adult New York City residents conducted from April 26 – May 9. The poll was designed to gauge opinion on current issues of public interest concerning immigration, labor unions, and overall satisfaction with city services and quality of life. Based on the results, BCSR produced the first NYC SAT (Satisfaction, Approval, and Trend) score. The poll included a cell phone sample as well as interviews conducted in English and Spanish. NONPROFIT/GOVERNMENT EVALUATION AND ASSESSMENT

  • Human Services Council (HSC) – Far From Home: Nonprofits Assess Sandy Recovery and Disaster Preparedness (2013)

A web-based survey of 104 heads of organizations designed to understand the role of human services organizations in Superstorm Sandy relief and recovery efforts. Developed with the Baruch Center for Nonprofit Strategy and Management, the survey asked about: services provided, unmet needs, quality of coordination, damage sustained, future disaster preparedness, and strategies necessary to accelerate recovery.   • UJA-Federation of New York Community Trust for Disabled Adults Evaluation Survey (2011)

A pen-and-paper telephone survey developed with the Center for Nonprofit Strategy and Management at Baruch College and School of Public Affairs to evaluate the advocacy services currently provided by FEGS as part of the UJA-Federation of New York Community Trust for Disabled Adults.

  • National Urban Fellows (NUF) 40th Anniversary Alumni Survey (2009)

A multi-modal survey of 391 alumni from the classes of 1970 through 2009 to understand the experiences of the National Urban Fellows and to help develop a leadership model for women and people of color to achieve success in government, nonprofit and for-profit organizations. The study included focus groups, interviews and a survey conducted by email, mail and telephone.

  • Human Services Council (HSC): The Helpers Need Help: New York City’s Nonprofit Human Service Organizations Persevering in Uncertain Times (2009)

A web-based survey of 244 heads of organizations designed to illustrate the ongoing and timely financial issues affecting human services organizations and to gain insight about changes in public and private resources, staff, services and programs occurring within these organizations.

  • Center for Nonprofit Strategy and Management Executive Outlook Survey (annually 2005-2009)

An annual web-based survey of over 100 executive directors of nonprofit human services organizations in New York that reported their views on overall conditions. Areas of interest included how groups in need of assistance were faring and how public policies and operating issues affected performance of the nonprofit services sector.   • Center for Nonprofit Strategy and Management: Consulting Day (2008)

A web-based survey of consultants and participants to gather their evaluations of and feedback on the 2008 Consulting Day. For more information, visit CNSM.

 

HOUSING, HOMELESSNESS AND POVERTY

  • Institute for Children, Poverty, and Homelessness (ICPH) Survey of NYC IV (2013)

A telephone survey of 1,003 adult New York City residents on behalf of ICPH. This was the fourth survey conducted for ICPH to determine public perceptions of citywide policies addressing homelessness. Full Report. Blog.

  • Institute for Children, Poverty, and Homelessness (ICPH) Survey of NYC III (2011)

A telephone survey of 1,014 adult New York City residents on behalf of ICPH. This was the third  survey conducted for ICPH of NYC.

  • New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Resident Satisfaction and Perception Survey (2010)

A telephone survey of 1,620 public housing and Section 8 residents designed to assess the quality of life and unmet needs of residents. The survey examined their perceptions of NYCHA, levels of satisfaction with their housing, safety concerns, and ways to encourage personal and community growth and development. Interviews were conducted in English, Spanish, Russian and Chinese.

  • Institute for Children, Poverty, and Homelessness (ICPH) Survey of Chicago (2010)

A national telephone survey of 2,021 adult residents of Chicago. The goal of this survey was to compare levels of public awareness and perceptions of homelessness between NYC and Chicago residents. The survey included a cell phone sample as well as interviews conducted in English and Spanish.

  • Institute for Children, Poverty, and Homelessness (ICPH) Survey of NYC II (2010)

A telephone survey of 1,024 New York City residents on behalf of ICPH. The goal of this second ICPH survey was to improve understanding of public awareness of family homelessness and determine public perceptions of citywide policies addressing homelessness. The survey included a cell phone sample as well as interviews conducted in English and Spanish.

  • Institute for Children, Poverty, and Homelessness (ICPH) Survey of NYC I (2009)

A telephone survey of 820 New York City residents designed to examine public awareness of family homelessness. ICPH is an independent nonprofit research and development organization focusing on action-oriented research that provides data and ideas to enhance the public policy serving homeless families. The survey included a cell phone sample and interviews conducted in English and Spanish.

 

POLITICS AND POLLING

  • Hill+Knowlton Strategies: Digital Media & the 2013 New York Mayoral Election Survey (2013)

A telephone survey of 1,001 New York City residents from August 19-28th. The survey was designed to assess New Yorkers’ engagement with the 2013 mayoral election, focusing on digital activity and the use of social media. More information about ‘Campaigning in the Digital City’.

  • NY1 News 2009 Mayoral Poll II (2009)

A telephone survey of 754 New York City residents from May 12-16, including 595 registered voters. The survey was designed to gauge public opinion on current issues, such as the H1N1 flu, the MTA, the economy and the mayoral election.

  • NY1 News 2009 Mayoral Poll I (2009)

A telephone survey of 705 New York City residents (535 registered voters) for NY1 news that gauged opinion on the upcoming Mayoral race, the Governor’s Senate appointment, and local economic and city issues.

  • Campaign Finance Institute Poll (2008)

A telephone survey of 646 Connecticut voters, including a panelback component from a 2006 survey, on behalf of the Campaign Finance Institute. The survey was designed to help CFI in their ongoing work to understand public knowledge of and views toward campaign finance laws.

  • NY1 News Term Limits Poll (2008)

A telephone survey of 626 registered New York City voters for NY1 news that gauged opinion on term limits, the Mayor’s plan to pursue a third term, and the recent economic downturn.

 

RACE, ETHNICITY AND CULTURE

  • Northern Manhattan Dominican-American Survey, CUNY Dominican Studies Institute (2008)

A telephone survey of adults of Dominican descent located in Northern Manhattan. Areas of inquiry included general health and economic conditions and the nature and extent of social networks both in New York and the Dominican Republic.

 

ENVIRONMENT

  • Sustainable CUNY Local Government Solar Survey (2013)

An online survey of jurisdictions across New York State on policies and processes related to solar photovoltaic installations. This survey gathered information about policies and processes to assist CUNY with establishing a solar policy in New York State. More information about NYSolar Smart.

  • New Yorkers for Parks (2008)

A statewide user exit poll of 269 park users at Queensbridge and Seward Parks. BCSR provided consultation, design, and analysis for New Yorkers for Parks.

 

EDUCATION

  • Future Paths Study (2003 – 2007)

A national web-based survey funded by the National Science Foundation. The survey tracked a panel of over 1,000 undergraduate engineering majors at four northeastern universities over a four-year period. The survey sought to understand how experiences as a college student influenced goals and career aspirations.
