Journal #3

Believe it or not, finding volunteering opportunities is actually kind of hard. not only was it hard to pick something to volunteer for, but it was even harder to find an organization in that field. anytime someone recommended something, it was usually an area they secretly wanted to participate it. We ended up picking something that one of the group members had already done before. During the process though, we realized how many adults were around to help us decide. Mr.Medina and the Volunteer fair were two examples of really helpful resources. it helped my realize that the faculty and staff is there to help the students and they will do everything they can to do so. it made me feel more comfortable and open to going to a teacher for help should i encounter a problem in the future.(for our specific project, the veterans office appeared especially interesting/useful).

i unfortunately have not joined a student club and i don’t know how this project has given me an edge in my other classes. other than the fact that i have learned to have more patience when working in group projects. being a part of this project has opened my eyes to what it really means to give back. many times people give back because they have to and not because they want to. picking a cause that we all felt passionate about made it so we could really appreciate the effect of the help we were giving. the people in need REALLY appreciate ANYTHING you give them and seeing that really makes you appreciate everything you have. it also helps you realize the effect you have on the people around you.

in three years, i hope to be applying for graduate school. i would want a few internships under my belt and to be confident in what i want to do when i grow up. i hope to still be here at baruch in the honors program and excelling in all my classes. i hope i have gained a lot of experience through all the culture events and volunteering i will do over the years. i also hope somewhere in the future i can find a way to make time and join a club i feel passionate about.

Journal #2: What does it mean to serve your community?

I think my role as an undergraduate student here at Baruch means that it is my duty to study hard and maintain good grades. I believe that its my job to try my hardest in everything i do and to be a positive influence to those around me. I have this belief because to me, if you are part of a community, then it is your job as well as anyone else’s to help keep that community up and running at its full potential. That applies to non academic things as well. This directly relates to the culture of service the Honor Program promotes. we are all students her at Baruch and those of us in the Honors Programs especially, receive many benefits because of this. That’s why i think the fact that volunteering is part of our curriculum is really important. we receive many benefits (e.g. no tuition, free laptop, amazing resources, etc) whether or not we necessarily NEED them. But, not only are we students, we are also part of the city and the human race. it’s important to always stay humble and appreciative. By encouraging volunteering, it allows us to realize exactly how lucky we have and how we should do everything we can to help others in order to keep our community, as a whole, striving. i think it should be a part of every single person’s mindset, to help out those in need of it and help out the less fortunate (not necessarily humans), and continue to build towards a kinder and more giving human race.

Journal #1 – Where Have You Been and Where Are You Going?

During my early stages of childhood, I was the only daughter my parents were actually taking care of. Both my sisters were in China. When my older sister came I had to learn to adapt and share everything with another human being. That taught me to be more giving. Before that, I had basically been considered an only child. I didn’t even know what it meant to share. I would cry all the time and want everything my older sister had. I cried so much that my eyes got infected and I had to get surgery. That experience taught me about suffering. I learned that you don’t always get your way and sometimes, it ends up really sucking. However, after both my sister came from China, i learned about family and being kind. I learned to be more generous and caring too. I learned to be a better person. In college I hope to meet more people that push me to be a better person. I expect to be challenged in every single class and i expect to be able to over come those challenges. By the end of college, I would think that I would have outstanding time management skills and have a much greater knowledge on the world around me. I am, however, concerned that i will struggle in certain subjects and i won’t be able to maintain my GPA. Another thing that frightens me is not figuring out what i want to do. I have known for a very long time that i would like to go into the field of business, but i have not figured out with area specifically. I don’t like the feeling of not knowing what I want to do in life. I was hoping college would help me figure that out. However, if college does not help me figure it out soon, i twill probably lead to anxiety.
