New Beginnings

Life as it is at the present moment is the result of all the choices, little and big, that lead up to that point in time. What has shaped me most is my Russian heritage and the learning environments I have been exposed to. Learning gives me the chance to expand myself as a person, and helps me think in new ways. Another aspect of my learning environments is that they exposed me to people whose ideas have influenced my own thinking. An example of this is my learning career at Stuyvesant High School where I was first exposed to people of different ethnicities and got to know more about different cultures.

My passions shape me as a person. In high school I learned to play a lacrosse, which is a team sport. It helped me learn how to be part of a group setting. I also love to dance because it serves as a form of expression to me.

As a college student I expect to be learning a lot of new things that will be useful in my career. I hope to expand my horizons and learn things that I have never heard of before. I expect to meet people who share my goals, and who will help me get on the right path towards a bright future. I hope that my first semester, as well as those to follow, are successful and that I achieve my goal. I hope that I will make new friends and that I won’t slack off.

Hi guys:

So, you probably already know the basics about me. I’m Pamela. We’re all in the same LC. How fun!

I guess I’m here to talk about experiences and how they have shaped me. I guess that’s what I’ll do.

My life has not been something completely out of the ordinary. Both of my parents are immigrants from Poland who came here in their early 30s to acquire a better life. They came here after the fall of communism in Eastern Europe and found each other. Bla bla bla, got married and then had my sister and me. My sister is one of the biggest influences in my life. She is probably the most important person in my life. Her name is Katherine and she’s twenty years old. She was the first one in our family to go to college, and I’m the second to follow. Having her in my life, and dealing with the same parents, we rely on each other a lot. My parents and I aren’t as close as I wish we were. I’m not sure if it’s the age difference or the cultural difference, or just the mentality of an immigrant that I do not share, but something drifts us apart. It has become extremely prominent in the last couple of years. I don’t share a lot of the same values as they do, and it upsets them. I’m trying to deal with it, but it’s hard.

One experience that definitely had an impact on me was when my close friend died. He was only a year older than me at the time and it was the most unexpected thing in the world. It made me view life completely differently. I don’t look at death as something so far reaching. And this is not saying that I have become completely pessimistic; it’s just saying that I look at life like tomorrow could be my last, so using up any opportunities to better myself is what I try to do.

I expect college to be a lot more work than high school. I really hope to get the most out of it. I want to still be able to do the things that I love, but at the same time, focus on getting an education that will get me a job I enjoy. I really just hope I do well in every class, and I get adjusted.

Where Have You Been? Where Are You Going?

I have been to a couple of places. I have no idea where I am going.

I have transferred schools many times, and my environment frequently changed. The two most positive things that came out of this are my adaptation skills and knowing many different sorts of people.

As I began this semester, my main concern was time management.  I am very prone to procrastination. Eating is my main form of it.  I distract myself with snacks. So I have been using this planner and I made it all colorful and placed stickers all over it. This maybe a stupid form of motivation, but so far it has been working.

My Beautiful Planner, checking things off has been satisfying

I am a visual person. Being able to see when I have exams and assignments prevents me from missing anything.  I am also able to see that I have some days on which I have more than one test. I’m anxious about that.

I’m not sure what I want to major in. It is a gigantic question that I feel like I’m starting to dream about. I was staring at the course requirements and trying to figure out which subjects I will enjoy the most. From that I am trying to deduct what I will want to major in. I am sure it won’t be business or anything business related. I am enjoying that class the least.  My favorite class right now is Philosophy.

I am happy that I am at Baruch. So far, I have been managing the work load.

Hello everyone!

My name is Maria, and I am a student here, at Baruch College.

I was born in Russia, and moved to the United States when when I was in sixth grade. I see this as one of the most influential events in my life, since it taught me to become open minded and helped me see the cultural differences and various ways of life in two different countries. To this day, I feel like immigrating to the United States, helps me better communicate with people of different races, who come from non-Amercan backgrounds, since I know what it’s like to be new and lost in the country where everybody seems to somehow fit in.

While being in Baruch, I hope to major in accounting and eventually earn a CPA. I am also interested in pursuing a career in marketing, so a marketing minor may be a part of my near future. So far, I am really enjoying the first semester, and look forward to the upcoming years.

In the past, I have participated in a wide range of extracurricular activities, and hope to do the same in Baruch. Some of these activities included school newspaper, student government, United Network of Student Leaders, as well as several Honor Societies.

In my free time I like to cook, especially when it gets colder outside and my apartment doesn’t feel like an oven. I also enjoy staying active througout the year. I love running, and this summer I started competing in running races taking place in NYC. At some point I would like to run a marathon, but of course, that will require a lot of time and training.
