Creative Assignment

It is my earnest hope that we will be able to have a professional cartoonist come to class and lead a  workshop in which you will create your own comics.*  In preparation for this workshop students should consult with their BAB group members and identify various aspects of the  book that you could render in graphic form.   You might decide to render several key dramatic moments; or one longer scene in more detail; or some story behind the publication and/or reception of the text; or a story  about  the author  that  relates to the way we can understand the novel.   Note while it is probably easiest to think about stories in and about the novel, you might choose to make non-narrative based graphics that emote a relevant feeling or posit a kind of question or get at a theme you want to highlight.   The hope is that you will  be able to use at least one of your graphics in your book.

NOTE: If your BAB is on American Born Chinese,   you cannot simply reproduce graphics already in the text.  You might make graphics for a bonus scene or the beginning of a sequel or alternative graphics for scenes that help illustrate the effect / importance of the original graphic choice.  Of course you can also make graphics that tell about some  aspect of  the book’s creation, publication,  or reception, or some aspect of the author’s life related to the graphic novel.

*NOTE TWO:  In the event  that we are not able to do the graphic novel workshop we will have another hands on workshop either on another topic that might help you in the production of your BAB (i.e. poetry, illustration, binding, or zine making).
