How are you doing? We have been thinking a lot about you, hoping that you are finding a way to take care of your mind and your body as we all adjust to this new (temporary) reality of “social distance” and teaching online. This blog will be your hub for the Black and Latino Studies Department while we are practicing distance learning. Please come back often to check in, find community and resources, as well as connect with your professors.
We’re planning virtual events so help keep you stimulated and connected, so stay tuned! The first event is a screening of the black and white film classic, “Nothing But A Man” (dir. Michael Roemer, 1964) with Professor Arthur Lewin.
In you need some assistance accessing WIFI and/or interent, here is a list of Free Hotspots and Waived Internet Fees.
Now, more than ever, its important that you practice Self Care. Here are some tips:Free Hotspots and Waived Internet Fees (3)(1)
- UNPLUG OCCASSIONALLY. Take a break from the news every now and then so you can recharge and (try to) relax.
- FIND SUPPORT. Please don’t forget you are part of an academic community. Check in with your Mentors and fellow Fellows. Message us, if you need to, pray, or try meditation. The Breathing App is a free option. And Tricycle, a Buddhist magazine is offering free meditation practice sessions online (using Zoom).
- STAY SOCIAL. Keep in touch with your friends and family. Group chat, set up a virtual gathering, or even a virtual study session. Here are some free playlists from our friend, DJ Sharee Nash.
- MOVE YOUR BODY. Now is a good time to develop an at-home work out routine. There are plenty of free, on-demand options on Youtube and on Spotify. Try Yoga with Adriene, FitnessBlender, or Tiny Workouts.
Most of all, please be sure to honor your feelings and remember we’re in this together. We’ll get through it together.
Professor Eversley,
What a great set of resources here! Recently, I wrote to my students to check in with them about how they were feeling, and to see what kinds of things they were doing while at home. Though things are ever-changing and at the time, they were still out and about (minimally engaging), there has been more of a shift indoors. I included a few links to things I thought might be of interest. I’ll be using all of what you listed under Move Your Body!
However, as we ride this thing out, there might be more screentime than ever in the coming weeks, but I’d like to know how you all are keeping and what your plans might be (even for Monday when we start the new week ahead…doesn’t have to be long term if you don’t have one yet).
