In the above link is a memoir written by Amy Chua, a Asian American mother who uses strict parental methods to raise her children. In the text she shows examples of what her two daughters Sophia and Louisa were not allowed to do. This list consisted of: Sleepovers, playdates, getting a grade lower than an A and many more. These set rules demonstrate strength in Amy as a parent and set a clear boundary that she did not want her daughters to cross. Amy compares her methods to western parents by describing how western parents believe that they are strict by telling their children to spend thirty minutes on an instrument everyday with an hour being the most. However, Amy states how that one hour is the easy part for her children, she has them play for another two to three hours which are the most rough for her children. This demonstrates the control that Amy has over her children compared to the western parents which allow strict discipline to have a strong effect on educational outcomes for her children.
