Getting Set Up With Tableau for 4/26 Class

On Monday, April 26, we are going to do a workshop on the data visualization software Tableau.

So you are able to participate in that workshop, you will need the free software downloaded to your device.

Follow these steps to do so:

  1. Go to https://public.tableau.com/en-us/s/
  2. Enter email address and click “download the app” right next to that.
  3. Make sure you have the correct version for Windows or Mac.
  4. Might take about 10 min to download.
  5. I forget when this shows up, but I would check “don’t send usage data to Tableau” (this might not be the exact language). That means they will collect data about various things you do with Tableau but also possibly stuff you do on your browser and other things. All free (and paid) software will try to do this. It is how they make money. Checking the box should limit some of what they collect.
  6. Run the application to download the program (will have to restart computer when done, I’m pretty sure).

I do not think it works on a phone (at least for free, there is something called Tableau Mobile but I’m pretty sure you have to pay for that). It should work for tablet. It definitely works for PCs and laptops, though probably not Chromebook.

Task

In a comment below, let me know if you had any issues with downloading Tableau. If you have no issues, just write something like, “I downloaded Tableau with no issues.”

I’m hoping everyone can get it so they can try it out on their computer during class. If not, I am still going to design the workshop so you can participate even if you can’t follow along on your own device.

I am having issue when downloading Tableau. I’m using Mac, version 11.2. After I followed and clicked through those steps to download the program, it said the program is installed successfully, then I clicked “Close” and I couldn’t open it instead it always ask to move the program to trash.
