Process Writing: Reading Response 1 – Quyen Phan (Queen)

The first example and the statements from the CDC official William Callaghan and response from D’Inazio and Klein’s interpretation make it possible to examine how the power is orchestrated from oppression (D’Ignazio and Klein). This example touches on the kind of oppression that almost every minority goes through, but nothing much is done because it does not affect most people. There are some racism and sexism elements in the healthcare system, but it is not taken seriously since it only affects the less fortunate.

Many black women are suffering as most of them cannot have adequate access to quality healthcare services. Many black women are experiencing birth complications, but nothing much is done to mitigate the issue. Despite several types of research that several agencies have conducted to mitigate the issue, it persists in society. Many black women are dying from birth complications because the system that the majority has developed oppresses them, and this has gone unnoticed (D’Ignazio and Klein). It only takes the suffering of the world star for the matter to be shared in the public. The women who underwent the same kind of unjust treatment also gained the morale to share their experiences, thanks to Serena Williams. The incident explains how the oppressors have manipulated the structures to ensure that their goals are achieved. Sexism has been a problem, but it is more evident in how black women are treated.

Another example that explains how the forces of oppression are structurally organized is enacting policies and laws that govern a given society. A good example is election laws. The laws were structured in a way that oppresses the society in many ways, but the oppression goes unnoticed. Some bureaucracies are put in place to ensure that only a certain race can vote over the minor one. In paragraph 4 of the power article, there were sexism elements, classism, and racism on how election and voting were done (D’Ignazio and Klein para. 4). The laws oppressed blacks more than white people. Feminism was also evident as females were not recognized by the law to vote. This envisages how the master orchestrates oppression.

  1. MAHIMA KHANEJA says:

Gender and racism oppression has been a part of this society since forever and it is our responsibility as future of this country. Clearly if Serena Williams hadn’t post about her complications, then people wouldn’t have heard voices of many other Black Women. Also, with the voting, racism has been visible since forever. For example, the Grandfather Clause; to avoid African Americans voting, the leaders came up with Grandfather Clause.
