The chapter instantly starts with the prime example of Serena William experiencing complications during her pregnancy based on her distinct ethnicity and skin color. It was pleasing to witness her fighting back against the system and social hierarchy made by the group of privileged people with the power and position. Serena spoke about her experience, but she represents millions of other black women’s voices going through the same pain. She is one of the biggest stars in the world, still it was surprising to see she was mistreated for being a black woman in the hospital. I am thinking about all the unprivileged black women/women that stay at public hospitals during their pregnancy, they must have gone through the worst experience.
The social problem does not start from the bottom. In the subject of racial/gender/ ethnicity inequality, we begin from the top. The social group of wealthy people also called Privilege hazard are the cause of intentionally running this miserable trend against the dominant people. They are the one making rules, laws and regulation but only in their favor overlooking the people in the need. As the author mentions, “This is not usually intentional; it comes from the ignorance of being on top. We describe this deficiency as a privilege hazard.”They run the media and neglect the stories of common people regarding the inequality in the society. Instead, to change the society, we need more people like Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela and more.
For instance, there will be a considerable difference between the experience of a person receiving treatment in a private and local hospital. A patient gets more respect and care in the private hospital whereas the experience in the national hospital is vastly diverse. Majority of people of color can not make an effort to attend private hospitals and they are typically treated by the privileged group of people (Doctors and nurses). The issue of social inequality has been there forever, and it can be controlled from the change on top.
I totally agree with you, we do need more people like Martin Luther King Jr., and Nelson Mandela that can help us fight discrimination. if it continues like this, what’s going to happen next?. we need leaders that’ll help put stop to this. But just like what the author said “This is not usually intentional; it comes from the ignorance of being on top”. which is true.
