Reading Response 1 – Malika Sabirova

It is no secret that healthcare system in US is beyond unfair and minority groups suffer the most.

The story of Serena Williams that provided a big platform for black women to finally be heard is a clear example of ongoing racism and sexism not only in the society, but in the whole system itself. Leaving women to suffer in the one of the most vulnerable times in their life is inhuman yet we continue to hear more stories as if we do not know that the problem is big enough to raise a real concern around it.

When Arrianna Planey, quotes Robert M. Young, who stated, “A racist society will give you a racist science.” And shows how providing data without considering key cultural and moral elements literally can switch the perspective and information as a whole she tries to tell us that it is not just all about “science” as we know it it’s crucial to bring feminism and to make sure deep research provided by people of color plays significant roles when it comes to digging up where the problem lies.

Stories with ongoing femicides till these days on the border of Mexico, are showing us how even after raising big concerns and providing large platforms after conducting good research present us a real problem in a full glory, the problem of the imbalanced power in the imperial model of the government. No policies, have been created which would significantly affect this issue. Now after all experiencing that not enough attention is being targeted towards these issues, not enough voices are being heard, not enough information is being provided, not enough concern is being raised we see the onging patterns and us going in circles of the problem and until we open our eyes and realize how actually we can “do good with data” like Irth illustrated, we will come to solution in much slower and hurtful way. So it’s crucial to bring strong feminists, brave scientists and make those in power to take actions in order to stop the oppression in the most vulnerable places.

“A racist society will give you a racist science.” Whew, this quote rings so true today and every day we don’t take the steps to tackle inequality. There has to be more that is done instead of commissions being done that leads to no results. This reminds me of “Nice White Parents” and the findings that came up.

The problem of racism and feminism still continue, those problems is the effect of the social constructed idea of who supposed to be in the power, and what gender should have the power. You mentioned a huge societal problem such as the femicides around the world; the focus on Mexico of this type of crimes produce consternation within women of not feeling save in the country. I have no doubt that this is a societal issue that I hope this will end someday.
