Assignments – Week #12

  • Textual Analysis Essays – Due Friday, November 5th.  Please submit your essays by midnight on Friday by placing your document in the folder that contains your Literacy Narrative.  Your essay should have a title that reveals something about its content, but the file should be named “Your Name / Textual Analysis Essay”.   If you have any problems meeting this deadline, you need to reach out to me BEFORE the essay is due, not after the deadline has passed.  Don’t forget to proofread your essay before you submit it, being careful to use the present tense when you discuss your text and checking to see that you you have inserted your quotations smoothly into your writing.
  • Dear Reader Letter:  As you did for the Literacy Narrative, you will be taking some time to reflect on the process of writing your Textual Analysis Essay.  In your “Dear Reader” letter, you may want to consider the following:  What are you especially proud of in this essay?  What do you wish you had done better?  What did you learn from. your ‘deep dive’ into your chosen text?  How did the process of planning, drafting, peer review, and revision go for you? What did you change about your essay between your first draft and your final draft? How did you feel about “loosening up” your language and writing in a more natural, authentic voice? What did you learn from reading your partners’ essays?  What got in the way of your progress on this essay? Why?  What else would you like your reader to know before he/she reads your essay?  These letters should be a minimum of 300 words and should be added to your folder by Monday, November 8th.
  • Chimamanda Adichie, “The Danger of a Single Story”: Please watch Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Adichie’s talk, “The Danger of a Single Story.”  You can find a link to the video under the “Texts” tab above.  Once you have watched the video, please share a response to it in the form of a comment on this post.  In your response, please share an example of a “single story” you have encountered in your own life.  This could be a time when you have been on the receiving end of someone else’s “single story” about YOU; it could be an example in which you found yourself having a “single story” about someone else; or it could be a time when you have encountered a “single story” being promoted in the media.  Please share your comments by Tuesday, November 9th.
  • Representation:  You may remember that our course is called “Language, Identity, and Representation.”  We have talked a lot about language, and we’ve talked a lot of identity, but we haven’t addressed representation yet.  By representation, I mean the way that individuals, groups, and experiences are depicted, written about, and presented to us.  To begin thinking about representation, I would like you to find a piece of media whose representation of a particular identity strikes you as being exactly righttotally problematic, or somewhere in-between, and be prepared to share it in class on Wednesday.   The term “media” is very broad; your selection could be an advertisement, a music video, a television show, a meme, a newspaper story or headline, a comedy routine, a film, a character in a novel, etc….   Think about something you’ve seen that you have had a strong reaction to – either because it handles representation in a way that you really like and appreciate or because you found it offensive or troubling.  In advance of class, please create a new post and share the piece of media you have selected.   If you have selected something long like a tv show, please select and share a short clip that would illustrate what you have in mind.  Please reach out to me via email or stop by my office hours on Monday if you have questions about this assignment.  Please post by 11:30 am on Wednesday, November 10th to receive credit for this assignment.

Karanjot Singh’s Recommendation Post

So the show that I recommend to everyone is The Flash. Honestly it’s one of my favorite shows since I was like 11 when the show first came out. I first started watching it cuz my brother put me on during da summer of 2013. And I don’t know why but the show has had me hooked ever since. Actually the reason that the show has had me hooked for this long is the unrealistic aspect in the show. Like the guy in the show runs Mach three which is humanely impossible to run at and shouldn’t be possible. Also people in the the show have other superpowers that you wish you had. I believe the show has something to it that’s just physically pleasing to the viewers eye. The show also has emotional values that display some realistic values to the show also. The different seasons has different characters that pose the villain of that arc of the show. So for example, the first season is all about the reverse flash who is supposed to be the greatest villain of the flash throughout time. The second season shows a new element of different universes and introduces the villain Zoom who is much faster than The Flash. But throughout struggles and losing to Zoom several times, he finally gets faster than Zoom. But honestly the show is pretty repetitive cuz it keeps introducing new villains that he isn’t stronger or faster than and has to find a new way to beat them. After Season 3, I believe the show took a downfall because it started to introduce villains other than speedsters(people who run fast)which sort of killed the vibe of the show since the very beginning it was introducing the plot that the world was run by people who can run fast, but sometimes those new villains can also be interesting like The Thinker who has a brain that’s so fast that it can out think  the The Flash’s next move which is impressive cuz he runs so fast and it should be impossible to see what he is about to do next. It has about 7 seasons in total today and I’m not sure if the show is still continuing any further. But in my opinion, it’s one of the best shows if you want to escape reality and watch something unrealistic. I don’t want to spoil the show for anyone but season 3 happens to have many twists and turns that watcher has to pay attention very carefully. The way the show requires you to pay attention to know what they are talking about is especially grabbing to the watcher. Even today, I can rewatch the Season 3 without getting bored because of how interesting that specific season was. The full show is on Netflix while the show’s newer episodes when it’s being aired usually gets posted on the CW app or TV channel. So I highly recommend you to watch the show The Flash, not only for the cool superpowers, but the emotional values that the show brings about.

Recommendation Post

I would recommend my classmates to watch  the show Friends. My most favorite show would have to be How I Met your Mother but after watching it all it wasn’t my all time favorites but it was a good show. I started watching it because it is my girlfriend’s favorite show and I said I would never watch it because I always thought it seemed so boring and it looked like it was produced older than anything I would watch at the time but I made a deal that we would try watching each other’s favorite shows. When I first started watching the show it seemed so boring so I would just watch it while I was doing something such as playing video games and having the episodes play in the background or have it on while I was doing school work. Even though it’s supposed to be a sort of comedy I didn’t think the jokes were funny and had some basic humor. After a few episodes I started paying more and more attention to all the details such as trying to remember the characters names and any details I could have learned about them. The characters include Ross, Rachel, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, and Monica. They know each other because Ross and Monica are brother and sister, Rachel and Monica were in high school together, Joey and Chandler were the neighbors across the hall, and Phoebe was Monica’s roommate. The first scene of the show is when Rachel enters the gang’s favorite coffee spot with a wedding dress. This is when Rachel then becomes part of the group. Throughout the show we see that these characters have very different lives and yet they become very close friends. Ross Geller is a paleontologist who got a divorce because his wife was a lesbian who was pregnant. Monica Geller is a chef who is a neat freak and needs to have everything clean and organized. Joey Tribiani is an actor who struggles to find the right part in entertainment for him; he begins with being part of plays and then moves on to television Shows and movies. Phoebe Buffay is a young woman who dealt with a difficult childhood because her mother killed herself and her father abandoned her and her twin sister who she not does not get along with. She works as a masseuse and believes she’s morally righteous. Chandler Bing is a young man who works in statistical analysis and data reconfiguration, however he is very unhappy working in a “boring office”, Rachel Green is a young woman who ran away from her wedding and since she was very spoiled she needed to get accustomed to living in the big city and making a living for herself. One thing that all of these characters have in common is that they have difficulties in their love life’s. Throughout the show the characters have a few moments where the begin liking the others more than friends however it doesn’t work out. Monica and Chandler become very close, get married and attempt to have a child however they can’t have one of their own so they adopt a child. Ross and Rachel go through many difficult moments of love and hate and at the end they have a baby together but are not quite in a relationship. This show shows an amazing friendship between all these characters that last for so many years. The show from what I know is currently only on HBO Max.Did you know the original story was about 4 'F.R.I.E.N.D.S'? 25 lesser-known facts about our beloved show, Entertainment News | wionews.com

Recommendation Round Up-HTGAWM.

I would like to recommend my favorite show, “How To Get Away With Murder” on Netflix. It first aired in 2014 and ended in 2020 with 7 seasons. This show is about a law professor named Annalise Keating alongside her students Connor, Michaela, Asher, Laurel and Wes and their crazy experience which involves murder. The first murder involved someone named Rebecca, Wes’ girlfriend who was a suspect of the night Annalise Keating’s husband was murdered. Bonnie, Ms. Keating’s worker, decided to take matter into her own hands and kill Rebecca as a way to basically silence her and protect Annalise. It only gets crazier after this first incident because the whole plot of the show is in it’s own title. It shows each characters personal life and their unexpected hook ups with other people and continuous murders. I love this show because it also involves their school life. They’re all in grad school pursuing their graduate degrees and it makes the unexpected, unexpected because they’re broadcasting a “normal” life, yet with weird turns. One of my many favorite things about this show is how loyal Annalise Keating is towards her students. She always keeps her promise of fixing things whenever things go wrong, whether that be murders she didn’t commit and takes the blame for herself, or minor inconveniences. I don’t know what else to add on other than the show being the best, especially with the addition of new characters which involve more of their personal life and investigations occurring. Oh and some characters die towards the end which made me sad because they def had a significant role in the show but I think that’s them telling us there is no Season 8.

Here’s the link below to the trailer. 🙂

Recommendation Round Up – Criminal Minds

I’m recommending my favorite show of all time, Criminal minds. This show is 15 seasons long and is about this special FBI team called the behavioral analysis unit (BAU), the tackles various cases and you truly learn many tips and tricks that you can use in your life. In my opinion, it’s the best show because it teaches you a very useful skill, how to read body language to the point that they can identify you and retrace all your steps just through your behavior. It’s very psychological and if you like FBI shows then this is perfect. Oh but warning, it can get pretty gory so if you don’t like blood or violent scenes then be careful while watching it. But if you’re like me who enjoys that then you will be perfectly fine. They investigate all types of crimes, from serial killers to rapist, to con artist and many more. I tend to watch shows that have to do with reading people and well … crime Like “Lie to me”, “Mind Hunters” (Also great shows that talk about body language) but I just enjoy finding out the why and how these criminals do what they do. I binged watched this show in 3 months (including all of the spin-off shows that it has) and by the end of it, I became a profiler as well, reading everyone around me, seeing the small details that everyone does. Each character also presents their own types of skills like my favorite FBI agent, Dr. Spencer Reid. the smartest and youngest member of the FBI. He’s literally a walking google, knows everything and anything, the fastest reader like he’s amazing. Then there is Agent Emily Prentiss who is a literal badass. She is very resourceful, has connections with Interpol, speaks many languages, tends to go undercover a lot so she can easily play any role that she needs to. And then there’s one agent who was there briefly who I think put a big importance on writing, Agent Alex Blake who is an FBI linguistic expert and on the side is also a professor. She truly teaches you to look closely at word choice, and how by reading closely you can identify a lot about the writer.  When i was watching the show i felt identified with all of the characters, in many ways i felt like i saw the many parts of me in different individual characters. I liked how they all used their own skills to help each other solve these crimes. If you are interested in watching this show seasons 1 – 12 are up on Netflix. 13 – 15 is on Hulu, annoying how they split the seasons on different platforms but it is very worth it. If I had the time I would re-watch all 15 seasons again and again. 10/10 experience.

Recommendation Round Up- YOU!

Ilaisher Olivo

The show that I would recommend to my classmates is called “You”. This show is on Netflix. It has three seasons. It was recommended to me by my younger brother .It’s about a bookstore manager named Joe Goldberg  who becomes obsessed with a girl named Guinevere Beck. She’s a college student and a writer. He becomes so obsessed with her that he learns her whole life story. And ends up making her fall in love with him. She then discovers that he was stalking her since before they met and that’s when the real craziness started. After she discovers this she attempts to leave him and he doesn’t like that.. His obsession with her makes him do many unexpected things. The show has a lot of mystery and drama so if you’re into those types of shows  this one is perfect for you. This is one of those shows that keeps you hooked and gets more  interesting with every episode you watch. Throughout the show the storyline unfolds and we learn what caused the protagonist Joe Goldberg to become the way he is. In the next two seasons he meets other girls and becomes obsessed with them too. He then starts stalking them just like he did with  Guinevere Beck. But little does he know that these women aren’t like Beck. They are smarter than beck. This results in these seasons being even more entertaining than the first. Crazy unexpected things happen with Joe and these women. For example he has a baby with one of them. This girls also learns the truth about joe like Beck and still decides to stay with Joe and raise their child together. They move to a new city to try and start over. But things don’t go as planned and everything starts going bad again.

Alr so in this post I’m here to talk a little bit about what I would say is one of the best shows that I have ever watched. I could fr write about so many things that I’m passionate about. But in this case i’ll be talking about my favorite one of my favorite  shows on Netflix. It is La Casa De Papel (also known as Money Heist) This is a show that I can talk about for hours and hours. So, to start off it is a Spanish Series. It’s about a big robbery in Spain. But it starts off with one of the Main Characters who goes by the name of Tokyo. Now, I will try not to make this long. So, we have this one man (who goes by the name “El Profesor”) who makes a group of 7 people who all have a criminal record. He calls them in to join his group where his big plan is to break into the “Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre” (national coin and stamp factory) located in Madrid, Spain. Oh right, I forgot to mention the other members of the group. So, something else is that they named themselves after famous cities around the world, for example we have Tokyo, Berlin, Rio, Moscow, Nairobi, Helsinki, Oslo and Denver. Those were their code names. Alr, so after breaking into the factory they proceed to hold the workers hostage and it becomes very chaotic not only outside where all the police and swat are but as well as inside. Conflicts begin to arise within the crew as well. In the second season we get new people as well as new problems . I could talk about every small thing that happens but then you wouldn’t be able to watch it on your own. When i say this show put me through a lot I REALLY do mean it. This show has made me tear up uncontrollably, especially the scenes where something bad happens to one of the members :/ . I provided some trailers i was able to find on youtube so hopefully you guys (those who haven’t) take some time to watch them.
