1a. “The Daily Life of the Immortal King” is a Chinese animated series that was released in 2021. It tells the story of Wang Ling, a high school student who gains the ability to regenerate after a freak accident. One of the standout aspects of this series is its unique premise, which sets it apart from other anime in the same genre. The idea of a character being able to regenerate their body is not something that is often explored in anime, and it allows for some interesting story opportunities. Another strength of the series is its characters. Wang Ling is a likable and relatable protagonist, and the supporting cast is also well-developed and engaging. The relationships between the characters are complex and multifaceted, and they help to add depth to the story. The animation in “The Daily Life of the Immortal King” is also noteworthy. The character designs are visually appealing, and the action scenes are fluid and well-choreographed. The use of color is particularly striking, with bright and vibrant colors being used to great effect to set the tone of the series.
1b. The three details that are most important for understanding this series is
- Distinct relationships between characters
- Protagonists (Wang Ling) seeming untouchable power scale
- Protagonists super long off screen life (millions of years)
1c. These details are so important to understanding the text because for one, paying mind to the distinct relationships between the series characters can reveal an emotional and relatable aspect to the series as well as contributes to a more broadened spectrum of personalities portrayed by the characters depending on who’s interacting with who. The next detail is so important because understanding the immense level of power that the protagonist has compared to literally any other character in the series is crucial to understand no one stands a chance up against him. He’s embodied as this nonchalant teenager living the highschool life which almost makes you forget the fact that he is the highest power scaling persona in the midst of it all. Another feat to understand is the fact that our protagonist Wang Ling has lived millions of years off-screen of the anime, adding to the factor of him being so unreachable in terms of power, experience, and scaling when it comes to it.
Move Two:
Wang Ling is a powerful being born with 30,000 “heavenly dao”, which scale power and demonstrate how strong one is. To get a perspective, even just obtaining one type of heavenly dao is immensely difficult even for those of high ranking, but Wang Ling was born with 30,000 due to his legacy of cultivation and inherent abilities. He’s portrayed as this teenager in highschool which there he finds himself making friends with Sun Rong, a girl from the academy that is portrayed as competitive and of high stature but when she noticed Wang Ling wasn’t like the others, she tried to win him over and became portrayed as the annoying and irritable type. Wang Ling did notice romantic interest sparking for her from his part but he just cant bring himself to express it well. They both are out for the same goal, to win the power tournament for their school district as a team, Sun Rong tends to have a positive impact on Wang Ling and in the end they both benefit from each others company and help for a better outcome of the tournament.
Move Three:
The biggest repetition there seems to be the periodic effort by Wang Ling to seem weak in front of his classmates because one of his goals is to hide his true power. One of the ways he achieves this feat is by having his family place a seal on the back of his neck that stores away basically more than ¾ of his strength. This show of the seal by his neck and it sometimes breaking apart because of conflict is much repeated. Another way this repetitive attempt to imitate being a weak persona occurs in the show is by having Wang Ling fail a lot of the academy’s power assessments. For example, the first ranking tests that determined which level class he was placed in, he had to put on a show of power in front of the whole school, just as everyone else, and he purposely failed it..horribly. Then there were instances such as in the academy tournament where people were matched up against each other, where he couldn’t let himself lose because his team would be eliminated and winning this was pivotal for the reputation of the school. In these instances he would basically forget about the “i have to hide my powers” aspect of his life and he got serious on his opposition, winning it all in the end for his time, but almost destroying the entire planet in the process because as using even a slight amount of his true strength, the seal on his neck began to tear and the energy released even before it was fully severed was enough to cause earthquakes across nations and the entire planet to shift.
Move Four:
The fact that Wang Ling never minds the rule he set for himself even after hardship, it means he can’t keep promises for himself, which in his case if careless, can destroy the planet. Him going all out in the end against his opponents to win the tournament for the academy proved that as long as you push hard enough, you can get Wang Ling to crack and his emotions will go off, triggering the seal on his neck to evidently start tearing apart because of all the stress and battle rush adrenaline.
If there is something to take away from Wang Ling disregarding the fact that he has the power to literally destroy earth in seconds just to win an academy tournament, it is that he will do anything in order to win for his side, and that’s just what it is.
Move Five:
An additional fact to consider is that this could mean that there is a possibility of Wang Ling going rogue, as if he just wanted to, who would stop his wrath? There is also the fact that his romantic interest was hurt in battle during the tournament so he was led into a rampage that fed off revenge, so is this saying that with enough emotional damage and tension, Wang Ling will go berserk on the planet?
