“Where I’m from”
I am from Air Jordan 1’s,
from Nike and Air Jordan.
I am from the smoke filled city.
I am from the apple,
the big apple
I am from platanos and bananas
and the big family,
and Xavier and Luis.
I am from the act of giving
and loving
From “Ponte las pilas”
and “pity pulmon”
I am from Catholic and Christians.
I’m from Ecuador, Cuenca,
emboragado and pernil.
From the drives to Guayaquil,
the radio blasting Gerardo Moran,
and the fat body of my brother.
I am from Ecuador, Cuenca, the beautiful and flourishing culture of the rich plains.
Hi I enjoyed reading the names of these familiar places in Ecuador, especially the “drives to Guayaquil”. These are a staple to my trips to Ecuador and hold a special place in my childhood. Every line of your poem resonated with something in my personal life.
What a masterpiece! I love the way you described your culture, especially the intro about the Jordan’s. I can see how our cultures relate in the sense of food and religion. Great writing!
