Syllabus Assignment

“He who opens a school door, closes a prison.” The person who wrote this quote is Victor Hugo. He was a famous French writer, politician, and poet in the 18th century. Some of his most famous works are “The HunchBack of Notre Dame” and “Les Miserables” which inspired many throughout his lifetime. Hugo was famous for his speeches that called for universal suffrage, free education for all children , and abolishing the death penalty. When Napoleon rose to power Hugo openly declared him a traitor and moved out of France in exile, he published anti Napoleon works which gained lots of popularity.

I think the meaning of this quote is quite literal. A person who goes to school and gets educated is way less likely to go to prison than one that didn’t go to school. In school you get educated and learn skills that will earn you money and you will be able to build a career with. Without this education it is hard to find a good job and build a good career, which is why people resort to illegal jobs to make money. A person can only do illegal jobs for so long until they get caught and go to prison. This quote resonates with me because its short and simple but theres alot behind it which makes you think. Personally it makes me grateful that I have an opportunity to be at Baruch and to study what I want. With my experiences and knowledge that I will gain from Baruch I can go on and get a good job and start a family without the risk of having to do illegal jobs and my family being broken up if I have to go to prison.

  1. This quote is actually something I personally agree with and your interpretation of it is right on spot. We today as a society don’t really see education as it really is education is that opportunity to get somewhere. Not taking that opportunity leads the need for the things that education can get you such as a career and wealth. So people who don’t take upon that opportunity for education are left craving for the benefits of having one and will go out of their way to do illegal acts in the means of living or to just have what a person who has an education has. That is why this quote corresponds with todays society with high crime and a lack luster motivation in getting and education and thinking they will come out ok. When in reality you throw out everything out that door when you don’t accept an education

  2. I agree with your dentation of the quote. Education opens up many opportunities for people compared to ones who weren’t able to receive any. Not only do we learn things to educate ourselves on it also teaches us about the real world and to learn responsibility. Some people who chose not to care about school may choose the wrong path in the world because they do not see themselves being capable of doing anything else.
