Code Switch Program

The article that I chose from Code Switch was “The impact of COVID-19, a million deaths in”. The article was mainly talking about the racial inequality and discrimination within the US healthcare system that became increasingly evident during the pandemic. Linda Villarosa, who was the guest speaker on this podcast, described her father’s personal experience with being mistreated inhumanely within a hospital setting. She felt that her father was being seen as a lesser being as he was held in restraints and was continuously disrespected due to his skin tone. Villarosa also mentions other instances where people of color were treated unfairly due to their living circumstances. For example, people of color tended to receive significantly less care and attention from emergency rooms since they were impoverished and had past health complications. The main point she was trying to present was that the healthcare system in the US lacks sympathy and compassion which further worsens the already present racial disparity. I agree with a vast majority of the points being made as I believe everyone should have a right to proper healthcare. I feel it is simply primitive to treat another human being differently solely based on their skin tone and social status. Human lives are all valuable and everyone should have the basic right to equal and accessible healthcare.

  1. I agree with your post everyone no matter what skin color they are should receive equal access to healthcare. Just because someones skin color is different does not mean they deserve a less help than someone else who skin color is lighter. People are sometimes so stuck up they think they are better than people and thats not right especially while working in a place that specifically is meant to help provide to people in need or who need help.

  2. Since I wrote about the same article I agree with all your points. You summarized the article/podcast very nicely and the examples are very strong. People should be treated with decency and receive basic and equal rights no matter the color of your skin. Great writing!

  3. I whole heartedly agree with what you said. Everyone should have the right to proper healthcare. To imagine that people still get mistreated in this day and age is sad. I like how you summarized the article. It made me have a full understanding in what was happening during covid to people of color.

  4. I completely agree with you, it’s so disheartening to see how even in our day and age people are still being discriminated against even when it comes to our health care system. You made great points, good writing!
