“Code Switch” Program

The article I chose was ” Chef Nicole A. Taylor talks red birds, red drink, and Juneteenth”. This article is like in an interview style. Taylor talks about the history of Juneteenth and how she decided to incorporate this history into her cookbook. I really enjoyed how she incorporated the history of Juneteenth into the interview I actually learned a lot from it. Now I hadn’t done much research into the history of it myself, but I learned that the holiday started in Texas in 1865. This was the day that Black Americans learned that they were free. In her cookbook she has over 75 recipes which include traditional foods and non tradition so people can “create their own traditions”. Things that can be considered traditional are brisket and burgers. I knew that Juneteenth was celebrated here in NYC but I didn’t know for how long and she said it has been going on for decades before it became a national holiday. she states that it is important to “continually tell the origin story of Juneteenth now that it is a nationally recognized holiday. I fully agree with her on this people should know the story of where it came from while celebrating not only just having it as another too way to come together with people and have a good time. I believe it is always good to be knowledgeable on new topics. At the end of the article there is an included recipe for one of her favorite drinks which is sweet potato spritz.

  1. Reading this filled me in on a plethora of information that I hadn’t previously known about. I find it very interesting how Juneteenth was actually started in Texas in 1865 during the day that Black Americans learned that they were free. I love how Taylor’s cookbook uses many traditional and non-traditional foods to help others make their own traditions, something I really admire. The origin story of Juneteenth was something I never actually knew about.
