Day 1: 9-12-22
Early in the morning around 7 am, I wasn’t in the best mode but I stopped inside Starbucks to get a drink. When talking to the barista I didn’t want my bad mode to be shown so I ordered drink in a very neutral/optimistic tone.
Day 2: 9-13-22
While coming back from school I was on the phone with my cousin and she was telling us something that happened to her over the weekend. In some parts of the story I would imitate her, while doing that I was getting on the bus and the bus driver was telling people Good afternoon while they paid. I stopped imitating her and smile and told him “Good afternoon” also.
Day 3: 9-14-22
I was on the phone with my mother and was speaking creole and was on the line at chipotle. When it was my turn to order I muted my mother and I code switched from creole to English
Day 4 9-15-22
I was on the phone with my cousin while on break and she was annoying me and I was in a bad mood since my shift started. I went to order a sandwich so I made sure my tone didn’t sound rude or annoyed when talking to them.
Day 5: 9-16-22
I was at work and my coworker and I were having a conversation, a customer came up to my section so I had to stop laughing and greet them.
Day 6: 9-17-22
I was at work and my coworker and I were talking and laughing about something and when we saw our manager coming we stopped and we got very serious
Day 7: 9-18-22
I was in an Uber coming back from work and you know when you get inside an uber you do the usual respectful greeting. The driver that picked me up first thing he said was “oooo your running away from work” and I code switched by matching his attitude and energy.
I agree with you that we often code switch when we are in front of our friends and not in front of people we don’t know. I had a similar experience this morning as I was getting on the bus. I was on the phone with my friend and making fun of her for missing the train while I was polite to the bus driver and greeted him.
when I read the first day I really can identify.
