I was angry with my sister on the phone and I was using a frustrated tone while on line to order at a cafe. When my turn came to order, I quickly switched to my polite tone of voice so as not to be rude and scare the barista.

While typing up an email to my agency to ask for my yearly statement summary I used a very formal and punctually correct tone even though I was frustrated due to the fact that they had filed my statement incorrectly. I wanted to be annoyed but I knew that it was not the appropriate response in the situation.

I spent the day with my aunt who speaks very limited English so I was switching between Russian and English when I could not find the correct word in Russian, in the hopes that she would understand what I meant to say.

My boyfriend and I had gotten into an argument and I had to restrain myself from giving him a ton of attitude, like I would with my sister in an argument, because I am trying to learn to communicate my feelings in a more efficient manner. I could have been cold or sassy but I figured this was not the best approach to resolve the argument.

I was trying to convince my mom of something I knew she would not be fond of so I put on my sweet voice to try to butter her up. It unfortunately did not help as she knew I wanted something almost immediately.

While at lunch with my friends, we were catching up and joking around very informally. When the waiter came to take our order we all switched to a calmer, polite tone of voice to place our orders.

It was my grandmother’s birthday so I had called her. On the phone I spoke very respectfully and more formal than I would with a friend because I see my grandma as an authoritative figure.
