Movie: Matilda 1996 Film
In this movie, the main character, Matilda, is born into a superficial family that likes watching TV and entertainment, in contrast to her having an intense desire to learn and be educated. Her parents constantly scream at her for not conforming to their standards as a family, although she isn’t doing anything wrong, she simply enjoys the more intellectual aspects of life. From a young age, she was interested in learning and started walking to the library by herself and checking out many books. The narrator in the movie reveals that Matilda possessed a rare ability; she was able to use more than the typical 10% of brain power that humans use. The extra brain power that Matilda used gave her the ability to move things with her mind, a power that she used to her advantage. She was very excited to start school but did not expect to get bullied by the principal, Miss Trunchbull. Matilda’s teacher, Miss Honey, is the sweetest of teachers and saw potential in Matilda. She ended up adopting her and gave her a bigger opportunity to be able to learn and grow.
Move one
The most interesting part of the movie is that Miss Trunchbull, the principal of the school, bullies her students but does not get into trouble for her actions.
Move two
The Chokey is a tiny room with rusty nails and broken glass, where children would get sent as a form of punishment. While locked inside this room, the children have to stand very straight to avoid getting cut. Another significant aspect of the movie is Matilda having telekinesis, and is able to move objects just by thinking about it. After practicing, she realizes she could control her power.
Move three
Matilda’s intelligence is shown in many ways throughout the movie. The theme of her family hating her is reiterated as well; it is evident that her family does not think she belongs with them as a family member.
Move four
Child abuse and neglect is common amongst parents
Gifted children, such as Matilda have a strong sense of curiosity
People that abuse others were most likely not treated well when they were younger
Higher figures sometimes don’t get in trouble for things they should be penalized for
Move five
How can we avoid this (children not being treated well)? More attention needs to be placed on them and parents should be required to attend a parenting seminar and learn certain techniques. Every individual is different, even when twins are born, they usually have extremely different personalities.
I have never watched this movie but it seems very interesting. What are some of the things Matilda have done with her gifted ability?
I watched Matilda when I was really young and I didn’t really know how deep the movie can get. I really liked your analysis of the theme of child abuse. When I was younger I never thought of child abuse as a theme in the movie but after reading your analysis it makes more sense.
