Five moves analysis – Matilda

The form of media I have chosen was my all time favorite movie ever, ”Matilda”. This movie was a movie that was created in 1996. This movie teaches a huge amount of significant lessons to its viewers such as family, intelligence, etc.

In the beginning of the movie, they introduced the main character named Matilda Wormwood. Matilda was the character and the family member that was different from her mother, father and her brother. The way she was brought into this world was seen as a gifted thing as she thrived in her world. She was into books and took her intelligence really seriously. Her family didn’t accept the fact that Matilda was more extraordinary than the people around her. Her passion for going to school was really high but her cruel , and un-considerate parents found it to be a dumb idea to attend school. With days of asking her parents she finally got the school experience she wanted.

When she attended school it was the turning point in the movie because this was the point where she had enough. Matilda going to school made her think that she was away with her parents for sometime. She has encountered the main antagonist named Miss Trunchbull. Miss Trunchbull was seen the same way as her parents’ evil and cruel behavior and didn’t want success for Matilda. This was when Matilda, having had enough. Aside from her intelligence, she also had telekinetic power. She has decided to use this power to give payback to Miss Trunchbull and her parents at the end of the movie. Matilda has decided to do her payback in a house ,Miss Honey, her teacher, is supposed to stay at. Finally, after Matilda has done her payback, she has decided that she wanted to be adopted by Miss Honey and live with her due to the fact that she connected to her more than her parents.

Move # 1

The most interesting thing about this movie is the idea about how the producer has used Matilda and other characters as a way to present  the viewers the idea that family is something that person or a group of people creates compared to just being born into the family. The producer has made this significant theme/lesson an interesting thing in the movie because Matilda was born into a family where her parents didn’t accept who she was until she met Miss Honey. Miss Honey has made her feel more of her mother than her own mother.

Move # 2

The significant parts in the movie was when Matilda decided to use her powers to give revenge back to Miss Trunchbull. This is such a significant part of the movie because there were events that led to Matilda doing what she did not only to her but also to Miss Honey. The things that has led to this was when Miss Trunchbull would always bother Matilda and pick on her on a daily basis. There would also be times where the principal, Miss Trunchbull, would put Matilda in the cocky and let her suffer.

Another significant part in the movie was the relationships that Matilda had with other characters. This is a significant part in the movie because this has shown the viewers that there are people in Matilda’s life that accept her and people that don’t accept her. This part has taught a major lesson.

Move # 3

Intelligence vs ignorance : these two ideas were being presented in the movie in many ways. The way the movie was set up the producer wanted to differentiate the characters and show how they impact each other in some way. For example in the movie, Matilda has shown that she is a really smart girl and her parents didn’t want to accept the fact that their daughter was so smart and had such a good future ahead of her. But the antagonists didn’t want the best for her and had such an ignorant mindset.

The music : The music that was being played mostly throughout the movie, was like this happy song. I think this type of music was meant to show the viewers that this is the happy side of things in the movie.

Move # 4:

Having really good intelligence is something that is varied from person to person. Being the lucky one in having great intelligence and being extremely smart makes others around you jealous and envy you in a way just like Matilda was being  presented in the movie. Envy is a form of jealousy. People within society don’t really realize that you can be either  gifted or trained to be really intelligent.Matilda has taken extraordinary actions to  train her mind by reading many books and having the eagerness to learn new things.

If you ask me, I would say that intelligence is something that is lucky or something you have to train yourself in doing. We as a whole want to be born smart but looking at the bigger picture we have to take any action to get our minds where we want them to be. This is where the idea intelligence and ignorant goes hand in hand

Move # 5:

Thinking about the major themes being presented in the movie, what if the producer of the movie didn’t make Matilda as intelligent as she is, would that shift the way the viewers look at Matilda?  Matilda might have maybe gotten more respect from her parents and other antagonists in the movie but how will that affect the other themes in the book? Because another major theme was the idea of child abuse. These two ideas connect with each other and one would die down. The way how I am thinking is that if there is more respect than there is less child abuse.

  1. I also chose to write my media analysis on Matilda. It was very interesting to dive deep into the movie and question it. Matilda was too smart and people started to envy her and didn’t treat her well. Some people were able to accept her for who she was and others were extremely mean to her. I really enjoyed reading your analysis on Matilda.

  2. The movie Matilda showcased how parents could neglect and degrade their child to the point she no longer wants to be part of that family. Miss Honey was the teacher that most students wanted during their education journey.

  3. I agree that envy was depicted well in the book between the characters seen. I also want to bring up the topic of ageism seen in the movie. There’s one point where matildas dad say “i’m smart , your dumb. I’m big, your little. I’m right, your wrong and there’s nothing you can do about it. Even Though he was wrong, he was the authority figure in her life. Which shows how ageism played a big part in the way she was treated.

  4. Watching this movie is such a core memory for me, it has always been one of my favorite movies and in a way is my comfort film. I enjoyed reading your breakdown of the film, great work!
