Podcast Episode Review – Kevin G.

“The Sporkful” podcast episode titled “Spicy Doritos and How Foods Become American” explores the cultural and historical aspects of food, focusing on how certain foods become ingrained in American culture. The main takeaway is how even something as seemingly simple as a snack food can tell a story about immigration, globalization, etc. I would recommend this podcast to my classmates if you enjoy exploring the stories behind food and its cultural significance. I have two questions that were raised by this episode and one of them is, how do certain foods become iconic in American culture while others do not? My second question is, how do food companies adapt their products to appeal to changing consumer tastes and preferences?

I Recommend Eating Sour Patches

As I sat down to write, a bag of Sour Patch Kids sat temptingly on the desk beside me, its vibrant colors and promise of sour-sweet goodness calling out to me. I just couldn’t resist. With a rustle, I opened the bag and selected my first victim. It was a red one. That familiar sourness hit my tongue, followed by that rush of sweetness that comes right after. It was a moment of pure bliss. As I reached for another, I couldn’t help but ponder at the complexity of this simple candy. Each Sour Patch Kid is a miniature masterpiece, carefully crafted to deliver the perfect balance of flavors. Lime, lemon, orange, cherry and blue raspberry all into one package. The sour coating, made from a secret combination of ingredients, is an accomplishment of culinary engineering, designed to shock and delight. And then there’s the chewiness. Each Sour Patch Kid is soft, allowing you to savor the flavor as it slowly dissolves in your mouth. Its a texture that keeps you coming back for more and more. Besides that, the most remarkable thing about Sour Patch Kids is their ability to transport you back to your childhood with just one bite. They’re a symbol of childhood innocence and joy, a reminder of simpler times when all it took to make us happy was a handful of sugary sweets. I thought back to my own childhood, to the days spent running around the neighborhood with friends, our pockets filled with Sour Patch Kids and our hearts full of laughter. Those were the days when life was carefree and the biggest worry was whether we had enough candy. But even as adults, Sour Patch Kids continue to hold a special place in our hearts. They’re a guilty pleasure, a nostalgic indulgence. Whether you’re sneaking them into a movie theater or sharing them with friends on a summer day, it is an experience that never fails to put a smile on your face. It also has an ability to bring people together, whether it was sharing a bag with friends or offering one to a stranger. These candies had a way of breaking down barriers and creating connections. So, the next time you find yourself in need of feeling better, I urge you to reach for a bag of Sour Patch Kids. Let their sour-sweet goodness transport you back to a time when the world was a little bit brighter and a lot more magical. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

Memory of a Meal Past: Kevin Garcia

A meal from the past where I value it a-lot is when I used to go to the supermarket with my mom and my older brother and we would pass by the frozen food section. Me and my brother would get this frozen meal called “kid cuisine” and just seeing the box would make us excited as it over exaggerated how the food was presented. The box was very colorful and we would each get our own and when it came down to eat, it was good then but now that i’m older, I know it was very a very bad choice of meal. This little memory made me realize that something as small as food even if it wasn’t necessarily good for us made us happy and it probably made my mom happy too knowing we enjoyed it at the time.

About Me: Kevin Garcia

Hi, my name is Kevin Garcia and I am a freshmen with my intended major set to be marketing. I am a first generation student as my parents did not pursue education any further due to traveling to the United States. I was born and raised in Brooklyn and I still currently live here. I enjoy many things such as playing sports (Soccer and Basketball), listening to music, and hanging out with friends, and playing video games. I have started playing sports since I was a kid and this still continued throughout high school as I was the captain of the soccer team there. Since the topic of food is such a big theme for the class, some of the food I like include rice, beans, and chicken. Some desserts I like are chocolate chip cookies, red velvet cake, and ice cream. I would say i’m a picky eater because if i were to try something from a new place and i end up liking it i wouldn’t bother to see what else is on the menu and just get the same every time. Despite this, I would say that food is very special because it can bring so many people together and have a great time. I am also apart of a marketing club at Baruch called American Marketing Association (AMA). I have met so many people already through this club as some have taught me a few things in my short time already here. The picture below is from the time that I visited Miami during the summer. My friends and I drove up this diner in the morning as we were desperate to eat something before catching our flight back to New York. It took long for our food to come but in the end it was worth the wait.
