“(GREECE, Chíos) A young girl charges a mobile phone at the former first reception center near to the port of Chios, where refugees and migrants who managed to leave the VIAL detention center a few days ago are camping out on April 4, 2016. Greece sent a first wave of migrants back to Turkey on April 4 under an EU deal that has faced heavy criticism from rights groups. Under the agreement, designed to halt the main influx which comes from Turkey, all “irregular migrants” arriving since March 20 face being sent back, although the deal calls for each case to be examined individually.”
I chose this picture because it shows how cruel Europe is going about this whole idea of deporting refugees back to where they came from. Everyone leaves for specific reasons and its sad that something like this is taking place in 2016.
The Humans of New York post above connects to my original post of an article because they both incorporate the idea that neighboring countries are sending people back to the one place they fought so hard to escape. This post refers to Greece sending refugees back to Turkey, But my post refers to Turkey sending refugees back to Syria. In a way it seems that their is a cycle of countries sending refugees back to their homeland, instead of helping them. Also, the photo represents this aspect sending people back. I noticed in the photo that the kid in the very front is smiling, the girl is charging her phone and the other two are just standing there. That one kid smiling portrays the happiness and security he felt when he reached Greece, but that may have turned upside down when he was forced to return to Turkey. The girl can portray the opportunities she may have been provided while in Greece. Overall, the main purpose of both of our posts is to inform people on how many of the countries that are supposed to be helping people escape and ensure safety, are the same countries sending these people back to die, live in fear and live unsafe.
