ENG 2100: Writing 1 with Jay Thompson

Erick Nunez Reading Responses

In my final draft, I used authority (Ethos) when speaking on the subject of hispanics and how they endure adversity when it’s learning English or in my case, learning Spanish. I used emotions (Pathos) to affect my audience by sharing my Thanksgiving story where, “The whole table bursted out laughing due to my aunt pointing out my poor attempt at Spanish.” By sharing this, the audience felt my embarrassment as much as I did. I also used logic (Logos) when speaking about my mother’s experience with learning English as her feelings of neglect could relate to mine.

The album “Welcome Home” by Aries is a 25 minute, 9 song adventure released on October 9th, 2018. It featured some of the artists previously released songs such as “Sayonara” or “Racecar” as well as a few new songs such as “Bad News” or “Amy’s Grave.” The album opens with a distorted piano transitioning into a light-headed beat with lyrics that include references to substance abuse and Aries’ failed relationships. This common theme is used in many of the other songs on this album. However, even with dark themes like this, Aries continues to use trap beats and alternative sounds to give the listener a brighter mood. It isn’t until the last song “Home” where Aries gives a heart-warming ending, concluding with him letting go of his past to greet a new future ahead of him. Aries used various marketing strategies to promote his album such as paying bloggers and going on tour. His album turned out to be a success as he gained much more followers after tour and took a year long break until releasing more music.

When writing about this analysis, I found myself being biased which is something I must avoid. Since this is one of my favorite albums of all time I subconsciously complimented the album rather than use general terms. Perhaps I could’ve gotten more in depth about the album however I’m not sure which details are considered relevant or not such as the process of making the album or moments leading up to the release date. Overall, I don’t have many questions and I feel confident going forward in this next writing.

Week 5 Reading Response, Akosua Omari-Dottoh

1.An example of ethos in my essay is, “ As I’ve lived in the US all my life, I never allowed myself to feel ashamed for being black…. However, when it came to my African side, I never portrayed that same proudness, I ostracized myself from my own African community.” In this quote I prove my credibility to talk about this topic, being both African and Black American. I show pathos when I say, “ I felt trepidation that that lost feeling made me do to myself what I feared others would do to me.” This sentence uses emotion to move the reader and show the reader how I felt in the moment. Finally I show logos when saying, “Black Americans are already discriminated against and treated badly in this country. Having to accept that they are too African is something that is too difficult for the majority, especially Black men.” This sentence uses facts as an introduction to the insight on why Black Americans feel the need sometimes to treat Africans differently.

2.This image is a visual representation of the phrase “ you got the whole world in your hands.” The image depicts a woman in traditional hospital/nurse attire, holding a globe of the world in her hand. The globe is surrounded by rope and gives the earth a trapped/restricted look. The woman is wearing a mask but shows quietude as she stands in the middle of a lake with a hazed view of a waterfall/rainforest in the background. This image was published on May 24th, 2020, in the midst of the COVID outbreak. This goes to tell us that the purpose of this image is to depict how at the time the world was essentially in the hands of these hospital workers, as they were overwhelmed by the immense scale of COVID clients they had to encounter and care for. The woman is presented as relaxed and that is to show that she believes she can handle it , she doesn’t show any sign of fear or worry. This is to represent that the workers that felt at this time that the world was literally in their hands, were indeed capable to take on this responsibility. This image is to tell those workers that it will be okay, they can do this.

3.While doing this summary I noticed that I had an urge to over summarize and not give enough analysis. While I was writing I felt like I lacked deep thinking and slowly realized that I wasn’t interpreting the image myself, and decided shortly after to try and do that. I also realized that it was harder than I would have thought to create a new insight and interpretation, like Blankenship suggested, because I felt like anyone who would look at this image would draw the same conclusion I did. I just realized I didn’t ask the reader any questions which is something I definitely want to do next time.

James Koloniaris Week 5 Reading Responses

  1. Ethos- In my essay I persuaded readers that in my childhood I was a shy and quiet kid. I did so by providing examples and stories of that time showing my credibility.
  2. Pathos- I showed emotion in my essay describing how I felt during situations in my stories. For example, I described how I felt betrayed when my mother went behind my back to sign me up for basketball without my knowledge.
  3. Logos- I use logos in the very first paragraph of my essay. I say how many children are usually nervous on their first-ever day of school which is a factual statement that backs up how my younger self felt.
  4. Shang Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings- This film is one of the most recent installments in the marvel cinematic universe. It takes you on a journey with a young man named Shang Chi to places like San Fransisco, China, and even a magical village. His father wields the ten rings which are one of the most powerful weapons in the Marvel universe. His mother on the other hand was from a magical village who knew a martial art that could combat attacks from the ten rings but sadly she passed away when Shang was 12. Shang ran away from his father at 14 to live a normal life. Here he develops a friendship with a girl named Katy who he tells his name is “Sean”. The movie starts off with these two at work as valet drivers. Shortly after the movie picks up with Shang’s father sending men to bring his son home after 10 long years. This forces Shang to reveal his true identity and past to Katy. Eventually, the two end up finding Shang’s sister in an underground fight ring trying to find more information about their father and why he wants them back home. Here is where they are captured and brought back to his compound. After many villainous monologues, they find out that their father wants to send an army and wage war on their mother’s village for keeping her captive. But this is not the case the rings have driven him mad and cannot cope with the death of his wife. With that being said a soul-sucking monster that the villagers keep captive in a cave is telepathically reaching out to Shang’s father with the voice of his wife. In the end, Shang teams up with the villagers and using their martial arts ends up defeating his father who eventually frees the beast. Shang then defeats the beast with the Ten rings he got from his father saving the universe.
  5. While doing the summary and analysis activity I feel like I may have gotten a bit carried away. I feel like I didn’t really analyze the movie. I just wrote what it was about in a long summary. Going forward, I want to make sure to analyze and make connections and find meanings of things I read/watch. Especially for the upcoming assignment, I look forward to learning more and practice more with analyzing so I can further my skills.

Wedad Mourtada, Week 6 Reading Responses

  1. Ethos, pathos, and logos

Ethos: “Honestly, I had no problem reading books that consisted of five sentences and three pictures on each page.”

Here I explained that I would read lower-level books because I was an ESL student. Therefore, I appeal to my audience, ESL students, as another ESL student, which gives me the credibility to speak on ESL struggles.

Pathos: “I didn’t want to feel special. I just didn’t want to be the only one who thinks in Arabic.”

I appeal to my audience’s emotions because ESL students know what it’s like to feel left out because of not speaking English properly. So, I explained that I didn’t want to be special because I’m bilingual; I just didn’t want to feel left out.

Logos: “Non-ESL kids did not have special powers, just a higher reading level.”

Everyone knows that generally, non-ESL students have higher reading levels in elementary school; that’s how students are classified as ESL or non- ESL. I persuade my audience that just because non-ESL students read at a higher level doesn’t mean they have special powers. Throughout my essay, I explain the importance of being bilingual and thinking in a foreign language.

2. Summary and analysis

All American, episode 11 “The bigger picture”

This episode on All American was made to remind people of the black lives matter movement. Tamika Pratt was an African-American woman who was shot in her car after pulling over to take a nap because she was intoxicated. The main characters, Olivia and Spencer, along with a few other people organize a vigil for Tamika Pratt where they talk about police brutality and the injustice that African American women face in the United States. This scene captures how the main character, Olivia, the daughter of a white district attorney,  was affected by the shooting. Olivia was drunk driving and she wasn’t pulled over rather she was offered a ride home. Tamika didn’t get the same treatment as Olivia. This contrasts Tamika’s situation with Olivia’s to capture the injustice that African American women face. Moreover, only a few people attended the vigil and the main characters speak on how this is the reality of BLM; many people don’t fight for African American rights because it simply does not affect them. The absence of the community during this event portrays the sad reality of the United States. This is significant because this episode not only exposes the reality of the United States but also brings awareness to injustice.

3. Reflection

In the first three sentences of my paragraph I just briefly explained the purpose of the episode and for the rest of my paragraph, I explained the meaning behind the events that took place during this episode. I can see the difference between describing something vs. explaining the meaning behind it which is what I attempted to do in my paragraph. While I understand the difference between a summary and analysis, I honestly feel like my analysis could’ve been stronger but I just didn’t want to write more to avoid summarizing. I think what made my analysis stronger is explaining the significance of the episode but I don’t know if I have to explain deeper or if that was enough. I think writing a summary and analysis in the same paragraph helped me see the difference between the two.

Tasnimud Tanzid Week (09/29/2021)

  1. Ethos: the characteristic spirit of a culture. From my essay, I think an example of ethos is.  “From Bengali to English, CRB street to faded Manhattan Time square road, and thirty-nine degrees Celsius to thirty-nine degrees Fahrenheit, I found a new environment and a new culture, a culture that not only reminded me of my old culture but perhaps influenced me to adapt to this new culture”. This is ethos since it constructively demonstrates two different cultures.

Pathos: A language that draws out feelings or emotions. From my essay, I think an example of Pathos is  “You have it hard, I know. Remember, your entire family is here to help you. ” This is pathos since it portrays my dad’s inner feelings about me and his emotion with me.

Logos: a rhetorical or persuasive appeal to the audience’s logic and rationality. From my essay an example of Logos is “Even though I was in isolation from COVID, I always met with my teammates in zoom and we discussed our next year’s plan. Then we tried to maintain a routine to keep ourselves fit since fitness is very important for cricket. Most surprisingly, this year we won for the first time in the PSAL tournament and we became a champion team after 6 years of losing the last two finals”. This is an example of logos because this is how I logically keep the bond with my player during this pandemic.

2. For the analysis, I want to analyze one of the old songs named ‘The nights’ by Avicii. I think this song is best to annalyze Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. His father his idol who inspired him to live the life as it was remembered in his whole life. Also, this song demonstrates the good bond between son and father where the singer remembered his father while singing since his father had died. This is a good example of Pathos where emotions and feelings can be seen in the singer’s eyes in the video. However, this song also mentioned some ways how you live your life with fascinating things. And finally, Avicii’s father’s inspiration helps him to go forward in life with joy and happiness. His father was his childhood hero and his father is his idol when he became an adult. At the beginning of this song, we can find a bit example of ethos where he mentioned some characteristics of a culture. This song tells me and anyone who listens to live life without fear, not to care what others think, to live life the best you can, even in the kind of world we live in today. Others may try to put you down, but don’t let them get to you. No Matter what they call you, gay, four eyes, psychopath, retard, shorty, slut, bitch, it doesn’t matter. They are only putting you down because they feel like they are better than you.

3. I noticed one difference between annalyze and summery and that is summery is retell the whole story using a shortcut format while analyzing is a deep explanation of a text which help me to know more about it and clarifies the whole thin. Summery is a basic idea and analyzing I think a deep knowledge about the text we annalyze.

Nick Serrao Reading Responses Week 5

  1. An example of Ethos is my essay was, “At that point I was happy, I think everyone was.” In this moment, I was trying to make the audience relate/agree with me on a certain level. An example of Pathos in my essay was, “I did not step into my school building, not one time my whole senior year, and the thought of that was depressing.” In this quote, I was expressed the feeling of depression in connection to not going to school. An example of Logos in my essay was, “I would wake up for class around 11am, do my class online, go back to sleep for a couple of hours, eat, then just stay up until 5am playing video games.” In this quote, I was explaining my reasoning for life feeling like a cycle.
  2. The song that I will be analyzing is “ILoveUIHateU” by Playboi Carti. This is one of Carti’s saddest and deepest songs when you really listen to what he is saying. He talks about how his drug addictions are getting to the better of him. One lyric that stands out to me is, “I mix all of problems with Prometh’ until I roll on my death bed.” In this lyric, Carti is explaining that he is being taken over by his addiction to Promethazine. Promethazine is an opioid that is used to make a drink called “Lean”. It is often mixed with sprite and it is known to be very addicting. Carti is showing that he is losing hope, and he doesn’t care about his addiction, because he says, “until i roll on my death bed.” This shows that he is willing to do drugs until he dies. The title of the song also shows his bipolar side, “ILoveYouIHateYou” is displayed in one word, without any spaces. This showcases that Carti’s feelings often switch up, and this is most likely due to his addiction to drugs.
  3. Today I realized the differences between a summary and an analysis. For me, a summary is just generally explaining what happened in a text, movie, show, etc. An Analysis is an in depth explanation of a certain moment or line in a text, that shows the deeper meaning of something. I realized this when I analyzed the song above, and went into detail about certain lyrics.

Crisleydi Paulino Week 5 Reading Response

Ethos: “Does my ego get in the way of my happiness? Yes. This is a question I can answer for myself. I’m constantly fighting the idea of letting my guard down and just being open about the way I feel; but at the same time I’m a firm believer that people know what they do and I shouldn’t have to explain myself to others as to why there’s no longer a connection. This reverts back to my failed friendships.”

Pathos: “Which then follows up to the next question. Am I living for myself or for others? The opinions of others are just distractions to the things I want to accomplish in life. Seeking validation from others holds me back from focusing on what I want for myself. I wouldn’t say I live for others but I feel like there’s an image I portray for myself that I would want others to look at me by. If someone were to describe me I would want them to say that I am a boss. Everything that I have was worked hard for.”

Logos: ” ‘Codependency is a learned behavior that can be passed down from one generation to another. … It is also known as ‘relationship addiction’ because people with codependency often form or maintain relationships that are one-sided, emotionally destructive and/or abusive (Mental Health America).’ ”

2. Summer Walker starts her song “Over it” by saying “Am I really that much to handle?” In this song she speaks about a man who acts like he’s tough and has it all well put together but in reality he can’t handle her and her strong demeanor. Her dominant personality breaks down a man and his ability to have stronger masculine energy than she does. She speaks about how she’s very closed off with her emotions due to pass experience which can explain her strong personality. She repeats the word “I need a man who can handle me” as she feels no one else has met her expectations and asks for someone who can keep it chill as the men she previously spoke to did the most in terms of being unfaithful.

3. From doing this analysis I noticed how a song can tell a story. Same thing with a picture or an object. I found this easy as I made my interpretations off of lyrics. Whereas trying to depict a message from a painting could be a little more complex. However, everyone can have different interpretations of a song, image, or object but no answer is a wrong answer.

Nana‘s Week 5 Reading Responses

1.Note an example of ethos, pathos, and logos in your essay: Cite and explain (1-2 sentences each)

Ethos: I tried to persuade an audience by stated as a immigrant has lived in U.S for six years at the very beginning of my essay. “I was speaking Chinese. My mother tongue is Chinese and I communicate with my parents and friends in both Cantonese or Mandarin.” It resonates with immigrant audience at first.
Pathos: In the middle part of the essay, I used a lot of rhetorical method to make the psychological description and the environmental description. Make the audience feel like they’re in the scene. “At that moment, the silence of the class was broken by sobs. …  but the teacher’s words didn’t calm me down. On the contrary, it made me feel more ashamed and left me with a greater sense of lag.”
Logos: The whole essay is about how I changed my mind set and use strategies on how to learn a new language. So I wrote down the facts that learning a new language is not hard as well as you determine to it. So I wrote the ways how I learn to the audience. “Watching TV series is definitely the most useful way to learn a new language, at least for me.” and gave more specific example later, about how this method helped me.
2.  Write a short summary and analysis o Write a short summary and analysis of a song, photo, short poem, movie scene, music video scene, or TV show scene you know well.
“Blindspotting” is a movie about both critical race theory and intersectionality, follows Collin, who is currently on parole, as he ends up serving time. The movie portrays a reality in which the main character changes a small part of reality, but remains stubbornly stuck in it. The whole story echoes from beginning to end. At the beginning of the film, Collin sees a fleeing black man being shot in the back by a white policeman who is pursuing him. (It was later reported that the police had fired without a proper reason.) Although Collin acts calm in front of his friends, there is already a lingering pain in his head. The director’s shaky shots of Collin suffering from visual blindness caused by nightmarish and morbid visions of dead people were even more effective when he used gradual sound effects to reflect Collin’s pain. Technical skills raise the terrible fact that black Americans are often present with a permanent post- traumatic disorder. For the pathos part, Collin ends up met with the cop who shot the black man, pointing his gun at him. Culminating in a fierce, brilliant monologue. But Collin didn’t shoot because he can’t let himself do that. Collin’s pain does not diminish even later in the film. But what Collin has been trying to do is to keep his anger under control and not really be the “nigga” who does the worst things. Presumably intended as a critique of white prejudice against blacks, director script is filled with biting dialogue and nuanced reflections on Collin’s efforts to avoid becoming a stereotypical angry young black man.
3.What did you notice about doing this summary and analysis activity? What questions, doubts, connections, opposing views, uncertainties, or observations do you have? 4-5 sentences.
I noticed analysis is to make an article, a movie or a poem more interesting, so that the author’s metaphors and symbols are presented to the audience in a known form. The author may only use one sentence, but the analysis is to express all the meaning, such as what information the author wants the audience to know and what kind of emotion the author wants to bring to the audience. Then use facts to support the logical conclusion of the story. But I’m not sure whether a good analysis should include a lot of quote in the article, movie or poem or just analyze them and only state what author trying to tell the audience.

9/29 Reading Responses

I honestly don’t see an area in my essay where I used Ethos. I think an example of Pathos is “After hearing so many things about how I was “Just a white boy” or “Are you sure that you are Latino? You look so white” I used an upsetting experience to get the audience to relate to you or understand what you are trying to say. I don’t think I used Logos in my essay either.

So before I start this analysis, I am going to put a spoiler warning. If you haven’t seen Attack On Titan past the end of the first part of season 4, please avoid this post. I would recommend reading/watching the series for full context.

I am going to be analyzing the manga panel “Freedom” from chapter 131 of Attack On Titan. In this panel, we see young Eren flying high above what looks to be clouds uttering the word “Freedom”. This panel holds a lot of depth to it, as throughout the series, Eren has always chased freedom for himself and his people. Before this moment, we know that Eren had released the titans (Giant humanoid creatures) from within the walls surrounding Eldia, the land where Eren is from. The goal of this “rumbling” as they call it, is to exterminate all life on the Earth besides the Eldians, to then end the cycle of hatred and discrimination that has been going on for centuries once and for all. The reason we see child Eren in this panel and not 19 year old Eren is because, and this is a sort of common consensus in the community, the version of freedom that Eren is chasing is childish and irrational. This because wiping out humanity, if it failed that is, only leads to more hatred towards Eren and his fellow Eldians. Later on in the story the rumbling fails, and further proves that his version was holding a sense of that childish naivete that Eren had when he declared his long term goal of freedom at the beginning of the show.

I feel that I was writing pretty knowledgeably. I did have a doubt about how well it was going to come out since I am not very good at analyzing. Other than that, I can’t really connect this to anything. I hope that the analysis was good and people find it interesting.

Selina Wang Week 5 Readign Responses

    1. An example of a sentence that I used Pathos in my essay is “ I felt my skin burning and quickly escalating while turning into the shade of a bright red tomato.” My emotion is showed through describing my embarrassment in this scene. An example of Logos is “  about 8,000 miles across the world from me, in a Chinese province called Fuzhou” I stated the location using factual evidence to support my claim. An example of the use of Ethos is “ She taught me Chinese while I taught her English.” This represents my credibility because it shows how I reciprocate one’s efforts. I give the same amount to someone as I take from them.
    2. https://images.app.goo.gl/Wy2zRTYVMxuL3coe8                                            This image from Squid Game is the scene where the game; red light green light took place. This game requires a lot of concentration, speed, and most importantly the ability to be able to stay still. The goal of the game is to try to get across the field within the given time frame. The scary cartoon-looking doll is actually a motion detector that shoots bullets at the players who have lost the game. A player loses if the doll turns around and sees a player move when she has said red light. This is extremely hard because so many players had no idea what they had gotten themselves into. They would never have imagined that this game would be so violent and bloody. After the doll released the first shot, every participant of the game was shocked and ran around frantically trying to escape, causing the doll to fire continuous shots, killing hundreds of players. In the end, the players contemplate if all of this is even worth it, will they risk their lives just because of some stupid prize money?
    3. This assignment has helped refresh my knowledge of the differences between summaries and analysis. Summaries are just brief overviews of the scene while analysis includes one’s own conclusion by breaking the scenes up to examine them for meaning. Although I know a bit about their difference, I’d like to learn more about them so I confidently tell the differences between them. I realized it’s harder to write analytical summaries as opposed to just regular summaries.
