Growing up, we’ve all seen commercials of all sorts, usually modeling a lighter complexion with a slimmer body. For years, society has emphasized beauty standards making us believe that we are all supposed to look the way they want us to. For example, women are supposed to be slimmer and your race defines your beauty. However, this has changed over the years allowing other races to feel beautiful as advertising has broadened their selection. This issue still remains as race is not the only problem. Men are told that they have to be strong and tall. While women are told they have to be slim and more feminine like. Having these “expectations” for people can cause insecurities and lower the self esteem of others. Not everyone can look the way society portrays us to be for various reasons. Some being health issues; people suffer from diabetes and others suffer from anorexia. It’s not easy to live your life when you have someone or something constantly in your ear telling you to change something about yourself.

    1. One thing I revised from my research based argument was changing my topic so that it corresponds with my sources. Originally, I wanted to write about the beauty standards in the 1980s to modern day. I was having a hard time finding sources with this specific information. So instead I decided to search beauty standards in general and got more insight on what other things affects society besides looks. Racism, sexuality, and mannequins was some of the things I found influence body image in our society. So my topic will now be how does restrictions in beauty standards affect people in our society.
    2. Academic intergrity is refers to quoting and paraphrasing at appropriate times. If you decide to paraphrase but most of it resembles the what’s in the source you can possibly be accused of plagiarizing. Essentially, you are taking credit for someone else’s work making it seem like you came up with that idea. This is why it is important to cite. When you use citation you are using someone else’s idea in your writing but you will not be accused of plagiarizing.

  1. How has beauty standards changed from the 1980s to modern day? Some arguments that can be made for this topic would be what influenced there to be change in beauty standards? Does social media have an affect on what currently is portrayed as our beauty standards? Or is it just people?

2. Gallo writes about how human behavior is always under surveillance. Norms and surveillance go hand and hand with one another. Gallo argues that surveillance violates the privacy of humans and however surveillance was necessary for things like “stop and frisk.”

Lang, M. “Surveillance and conformity in competitive youth swimming”. Sport, Education and Society, vol. 15, no. 1, Sport, Education and Society, 2010, pp. 19–37.

3. After examining the quotes on my own I noticed how they clearly support the argument. Quotes were used for background and to support their claim on their current paragraph. They quoted the author fairly as some of the quotes were originally very long and necessary to include the whole thing.

Foucault, Michel. “Panopticism from Discipline & Punish: The Birth of the Prison.” Race/ethnicity: Multidisciplinary Global Contexts, vol. 2, no. 1, Indiana University Press, Oct. 2008, pp. 1–12.

  1. One way I practice crap detection is by ignoring things that bring negative energy. For example, when I hear someone speaking bad on someone else I usually decide to ignore for multiple reasons. One because it’s non of my business and two because whatever goes around comes back around and  I’m an unproblematic person. I don’t look for problems with others and people don’t look for problems with me.
  2. A new tool that I learned that I have yet to consider is the audience. At some point in my writing I do think about my audile but never in the perspectives of advocates or opponents. I think this is a good strategy that I can add to my writing and possibly include a rebuttal paragraph.
  3. A past rule about writing that is no longer helpful to me would be planning out my whole essay before actually writing it. I find this to be helpful sometimes or on rare occasions. However, I would much rather free write and organize my writing after I have something written down on my paper.
  4. An unpopular opinion that I support is abortion. I believe that women have the right to decide what they want to do with their own body and the opinions of others shouldn’t matter. A lot of the times women can’t bring a child into this world because they can’t support them. Reasons as to why they can’t support a child would be because they’re not financially stable, they got disowned by their family, abusive situations etc. Another unfortunate situation would be rape. If a young girl gets raped and ends up pregnant she shouldn’t be forced to keep that baby. Women should be able to make their own decisions when it comes to bringing a child into this world.

  1. One process I’ve pursued entirely for pleasure is setting up a schedule for my day. I usually do this on the days I have a lot to do. I set up times for the things I want to do. I don’t usually set an end time as I don’t know how long my tasks can take. But, I get satisfaction from completing everything I had planned for that day.
  2. Sometimes when I’m riding on the train I examine those around me and wonder what things they’re currently going through in their personal life. Although I may never have an answer to my own questions it gives me comfort to think that everyone is human and we all go through things in life. Other times I picture myself as someone else and try to look at myself from their point of view. It would be nice to know myself through someones else’s eyes. Lastly, at times I wonder how my life would’ve been different if I was born wealthy. What opportunities will I have, where would I be living, where would I be in life, and what would be my parents occupation that brings wealth.
  3. Performing your own experiments and interviews are important. From this you can get a personal sense of things on your own. from experimenting you can learn where you went wrong and what things you can do differently moving forward. When you interview others around you, you can get an idea of their way of thinking and why they think that way. It also feels more real than just searching it up online or watching a video on your topic.

  1. Chau speaks on the discrimination Asian immigrants faced and the stereotype.
  2. This issue is controversial because America is supposed to be a free land and everyone is welcomed. no one should feel as if they don’t belong here. Asians as well as everyone else are equally as important.
  3. I feel like Chau’s strongest argument was about how Asians are always being criticized by others. People constantly put them into these stereotypes without obviously knowing them.
  4. The best argument for the other side would be the gold rush. Since the gold rush, a big population of Asians came to the US. They came for new opportunities such as jobs.
  5. One thing I discovered is how much asians are put into these stereotypes. Yes, ethnic group are put into stereotypes but some of the stereotypes that Asians were put into weren’t necessarily bad things even though they seem like they are.

Yablonovoskiy’s family Como from the southern area of Ukraine. they immigrated in 1997 to the United States because of religious persecution against jews. His family wanted him to value their culture despite the fact that they disliked the system they had back at home. The show Nu Pogodi was once just a show for Yablonovoskiy but as he grew older he realized that the show portrayed the life of his parents and grandparents. Growing up his grandfather would always speak on how life was for him. It was clear that this show was something significant not only to him but to his grandfather  as it spreader the idea of communism. Even though the family is very different they still find a way to connect with one another.

Yablonovoskiy’s essay was very effective as it focused on comparing a show to the life his family are up living. It shines light to the injustices his family had to deal with when it came to their religion and how hard their life once were. The show in itself illustrated Communism and it gave something for him and his family to relate to.

This course has really helped me with my writing and time management. In terms of my writing I’ve learned to analyze things deeper than what is being  projected. In high school most of my essays restricted me from writing about personal things or opinions but with the projects we’ve done so far, I’ve been pushed to add in a story of my personal experience to make my writing better. When it comes to time management, I’m still working on how to prioritize this class with my others but for the most part everything is manageable.

Crisleydi Paulino Business Analysis

In my neighborhood there are two bakeries. One is on St. Nicholas and the other is on Audubon. One of the key significant things I noticed is where they are located. St. Nicholas is more of a busy street. You have a lot of stores accessible to you that you can consume products from. Whereas Audubon has more services that you can receive. For example, hair salons and barbershops. I say this because the amount of customers that the bakery in St. Nicholas has is more than the bakery in Audubon. When having  a business I believe your location is important as it can determine the customers you attract.

One of the majors I chose was marketing management. The main focus is to built and better your relationship with your customers. Both bakeries exceed at this but from experience the bakery in St. Nicholas surpasses these expectations more. For one they have more workers. The workers are always attentive and kind and make sure that you are content with your order. This is a great thing as it attracts more people to their business. Washington Heights is mainly a Spanish community. A student with a Spanish major may ask, how does one communicate with someone who doesn’t speak Spanish? Some of the workers may not be fluent in English but they know more than enough to be able to communicate and understand  what is being asked. The last major I chose was finance. Where do their investments go? To their business. With the money they make they buy more products to be able to make more breakfasts, cakes, sweets and more to give back to the community.

The song starts off by saying “Said you belong to the streets but the streets belong to me.” To understand this quote you have to think about it figuratively. If you understand New York slang, you would know that “belonging to the streets” refers to someone who can’t be committed as they are dating as many people as they want; Essentially you are someone who can’t be wifed up, or a h*e. When Drake starts off the song with these lyrics, what he really is saying is, “okay I know you talking to other people, no strings attached, but the streets belong to me; I really run this player mindset/behavior more than you do.” From the beginning of the song it is foreshadowed that this woman wasn’t someone he could have a relationship with but he decided to do so otherwise. In the background of the song you hear drums and a person saying “oh oh oh” smoothly in different octaves. He then, however, goes to explain the things he did for this woman. He says, “I tatted your passport up now it’s looking like an arm sleeve/ just know that was all me.” He flew her out to many different countries which is why her passport is tatted up, in other words, stamped everywhere.
