ENG 2100: Writing 1 with Jay Thompson

Nishmitha Rodrigo Week 8 Blogpost

Ever watched a stereotypical teen romance movie and saw how awful the popular mean girl is? Well, that’s exactly how Blair Waldorf, from Gossip Girl, and Alison Dilaurentis, from Pretty Little liars, are perceived in their shows. At first look, the viewer sees them as such an awful character who doesn’t care about anyone but themselves, which they do seem to be in all honesty. However, once you analyze them, their lives, and their backgrounds it all seems to add up. All of a sudden you begin to understand why they act the way they do and do the things they do. Home life and how people you love treat you has a lot to do with how you treat the people in your life. This was the case with both of the characters in this show. They had an inconsistent and distrustful home life and they were backstabbed by people they loved and held dearly, which essentially led to both characters developing a defense mechanism to deal the trauma and prevent any further hurt to themselves from external factors.

  1. Your analysis on how it is unethical to judge someone from the outside without knowing their backstory gives me a good idea on what your claim might be which is a good sign!
