ENG 2100: Writing 1 with Jay Thompson

Wedad Mourtada, Analysis of a business 10/25

The Kasbah Cafe is a new Algerian cafe that opened in the summer, and it’s located in Sunnyside, NY. There are only six small tables with two or three blue chairs around each table, and most people take their orders to go. It’s a quiet place perfect for people who want to study or do their work; I’m writing this analysis in the cafe because it’s such a calm place. Surprisingly, they don’t play any cultural music, which made it hard to figure out that it was Algerian; someone had to tell me it was, and if they didn’t, I wouldn’t have figured it out. Their pastries are always fresh, and they even have homemade cookies which gives this place a cozy vibe. They serve their pastries in small baskets and there are also different tea boxes on the counter that you can choose from. They serve breakfast along with some lunch dishes, and sandwiches which are convenient for the people living in the neighborhood. I’ve seen teachers on their lunch breaks, students in the morning, and Kumon tutors at this cafe. I mostly only see people who are always on the go.

A real estate student or expert would ask the owner what appealed to him when he bought/rented the store. Did he consider the benefits of the school and the Kumon tutoring center next to it? A real estate agent would think about how this store used to look like before and how it was transformed into a cafe. It was a barbershop before it was a cafe. A real estate agent would have new ideas to convince people to buy/rent a property by explaining that they can transform the place to fit any business they want. An accountant would think about the expenses of the cafe and why they change or stay the same over time. For example, while most people might see this as a regular cafe, an accountant would think about how much money this business earns daily. Do they earn enough money to pay the rent? How expensive is the rent? A marketing management student would think about the neighborhood’s needs and how the cafe can fulfill those needs. They’d ask questions about the majority of the people who enter the cafe each day, what would they want to have in this cafe?

I chose numbers 1,22, and 31 which are real estate, marketing management, and accountancy. First I analyzed the cafe as a regular customer and I was actually there when I wrote my paragraphs. I learned a little more about the majors that I chose and tried to imagine myself as a student in each major and think about the type of questions I’d want to know as a real estate, marketing manager, and accountancy student. I tried to think beyond just the things that I could see in the cafe which was the food, furniture, and people.

  1. Great details here, Wedad– I’m especially struck by this business’s non-specific atmosphere (you learned only later that it was Algerian!) and your many small observations (those pastry baskets).
