- “Serena’s behavior, on this particular Sunday afternoon, suggest that all the injustice she has played through all the years of her illustrious career flashes before her and she decides finally to respond to all of it with a string of invectives.” I found this quote to be interesting because the anger that Serena portrays during her game comes from past experiences and rejections, and in a way it helps her play to her fullest potential.
- “As offensive as her outburst is, it is difficult not to applaud her for reacting immediately to being thrown against a white background.” This quote has purpose to the world and the audience. Serena was accused of moving her foot wrongly during the game and she lashed out at the other player. Although what she did wasn’t very ideal to others, she stood up for herself in a “white background.”
“…it is difficult not to think that if Serena lost context by abandoning all rules of civility, it could be because her body, trapped in racial imagery, trapped in disbelief – code for being black in America- is being governed not by the tennis match she is participating in but by a collapsed relationship that had promised to play by the rules.” Logos is used in this quote as the point of this quote is to persuade the audience that she wasn’t wrong fro lashing out; they were wrong for calling her out on a false move.
There’s been multiple times where I have communicated with my eyes. I remember one time being with a group of people at an event and feeling uncomfortable. I looked at my friends and moved my eyes repeatedly to the right, signalizing the bathroom. I felt very anxious as I hoped they understood what I was trying to say while also trying to get out of the situation I was in. Although they didn’t understand what was going on, they understood that I didn’t want to be there anymore. They immediately realized that I was signaling to go to the bathroom and proceeded to go with me. As a female, I feel like this is something we do a lot when we are in a uncomfortable situation or conversation. That certain look is a look for “help.”
I agree with your statement with how unfairly Serena was treated, the logos was used in a correct manner. It was used in a way of what others had thought of the situation, which allowed the statement on how she was being treated much more accountable.
I noticed the comment about “white background” when I read the text as well and think Serena’s outburst was not uncalled for. She was upset about the injustice over the years in her sport and got sick of poor treatment. The quote you used for the first question was thought provoking and kept with the theme portrayed in your second answer.
I like how you used the quote and explained how Serena Williams uses the built-up anger as motivation to play/perform on the highest level.
I actually used similar quotes in my analysis. Good use of logos
I love the second quote that you talked about, and how you showed that even though you may not agree, you understood. I think continuing with that logic can be a good tool for you to use while doing your analysis paper.
Your experience of communicating without using words is a very common one and signaling with your eyes is a really good tactic to communicate with someone you cannot verbally talk to. I am glad you got out of a situation that made you uncomfortable.
