Aria Malovany Reading Response 12/1

  1. After reading Lunsford and Ruszkiewicz and familiarizing myself with Ede’s method, I revised my paper to give more credit to my sources. Although I cited the websites in a bibliography, I hardly gave my articles credit in the words of my paper. I also decided to change some words in my essay to make it less similar to the words of the article, although I am highlighting the same point. I also now understand that quoting a source is for its well-written language or complicated concepts, but also for agreeing or disagreeing with an author.
  2. According to Lunsford and Ruszkiewicz, academic integrity is defined as giving your sources credit when using their information. This will enhance your ethos. If you find yourself stuck on trying to paraphrase something that the author said perfectly, just quote their words to provide the best information and credibility possible for readers. Plagiarism happens if you’re not careful which can create the ethical issue, said by Lunsford and Ruszkiewicz, of claiming another’s work as your own.

  1. Something I revised in my paper was the repstive language I used when quoting an author’s text. I often found myself using the word “claims”. After reading Lunsford and Ruszkiewicz, I found a list of signal verbs to use such as replies, expresses, and discusses. I also revised some of the quotes I placed in my writing and replaced them with quotes people will find interesting. This is key to keeping the reader’s attention. Finally, since a huge part of my research based argument comes from summarizing information I learned, I decided to use more of my own words opposed to the author’s to keep my language objective.

  1. Lunsford and Ruszkiewicz defined academic integrity as both an ethical issue and academic one. When you are writing an argumentative essay, you may find yourself having to give an author’’s opinion. In this instance, it’s best to directly quote the author’s words instead of parag[hraing what they said in order to eliminate any bias you may use when rephrasing their words. When writing a paper, you use outside sources all the time. It’s important to make sure you cite the work you have borrowed to the best of your ability to enhance ethos in your paper. It’s not just an academic issue because stealing someone’s words comes down to how well you can be trusted as a writer. Nobody will want to read or believe your work if you are known for stealing sources and ideas.

Karen Leonardo Reading Response 12/01

  1. Something I revised in my paper was when I summarized the central idea of a passage. Not only did I summarize the long passage I also used evidence from the passage to back up my summary. I did this because I felt that summarizing the passage instead of just using a small section of it would be more convenient in my paper. Acknowledging the fact that the article supports my argument I took that to my advantage and shortened it up for the readers to get a sense of understanding, they would also get an idea of where my paper is headed. I also quoted a couple of my sources to back up what I had to say about my argument.
  2. According to Lunsford and Ruszkiewicz, academic integrity is giving proper credit to the creators of different types of sources. It is extremely easy to be accused of plagiarizing if a source is not properly cited. Even a small picture that was used on a piece of work could be accused of plagiarism for the simple fact that it was not properly cited like it should have been. Lunsford and Ruszkiewicz feel that proper citation is an ethical issue because the writer who does not give proper citation is technically claiming that as their own work, which is not. That is considered to be an ethical issue.

I personally think it is better to preserve a cultural History writing with our home language Because when you write something in your own language, you can portray your own feelings and you can spread your own as much as possible with your own language rather than using another language. However, I think when you write something in your language you can translate it into English if you got a better response from your home people. However, it depends on individuals’ choices about how they desire to write. For example, Ngugi mentioned “That thinking made me say no — from now onwards, I’ll be writing in my mother tongue” So he argument was in favor of his home language. On the contrary, Ruhsdi argued about how English is a very important language in Indian since they contain English as their main language in school. In my personal opinion, I think language does not matter until you have something to spread  your message in large size of population

Atai Isaev, Reading Response, Week 15

  1. I added a paraphrase and a summary into my paper. I also got rid of footnotes. Put works cited page instead. I also made a mistake of citing the wrong author, so I fixed that too. Fixed my citation to properly reflect that multiple authors have written one of my sources.
  2. Academic integrity is when you properly cite your sources. It’s when you acknowledge when you borrow someone else’s ideas. Not properly citing your sources would be the same as claiming someone’s work as your own. They say that even though the phrase “there’s nothing new under the sun,” and it’s impossible to acknowledge every single thing you’ve been influenced by, you should aim to cite when you directly take someone else’s ideas.

Eric Noah week 11/29

I have a strong belief that using your original home language helps preserve your cultural identity. In writing, it is very important to sound fluent and clear and when writing in your original language give the ability for better fluency. It also helps the writer express themselves and show how passionate they are through their writing. In the article, Ngugi stated that there was an “unequal relationship of power between languages” between how his mother spoke and English. when speaking there should be the same amount of understanding through both languages and not an uneven balance. Rushdie spoke about how in British India children have been using English in writing from a young age which helps prevent an unbalanced relationship between their home language and English. As long as the writer has the ability to express himself through his writing that’s most important.

Ibrahim Rauf, Blog Post, 11/29

The best way to protect cultural history is to encourage people to speak and write in their favorite language. Using a native language can make a culture longer, but other technologies can help people appreciate a culture for a longer period of time because they will not be discouraged by trying to learn a new language. “They see it as an Indian language as one of the skills they must master,” the author said. Similar to Indians who use English, this word is used to refer to them. Nevertheless, some people think that English is a remnant of British history, and they were lost after being conquered. Nguji said that the “unequal power relationship between languages” refers to the post-colonial African government imprisoning him for writing in African languages. He tried to write in his native language, but finally gave up. The persecution of Ngugi was because he did not write in his native language.
