BLOG POST #4 !

By attending the enrichment workshop on values and benefits of service, I learned about unfamiliar benefits to helping others. Not only is volunteering a nice way to help and give back to others, but according to Dr. Stephen Post, providing your service to others is also good for your health! He emphasized love and with other scientists created studies on unlimited love. He is convinced that people who give are much happier than others and also live longer. Studies and surveys show that volunteering helps people feel stronger and healthier. Researchers have actually conducted a study where they interviewed 12 year olds and about 100 of them said they wanted to help humanity. The researchers then went on and followed the kids who said they want to help the world and studies showed they had lower levels of heart disease, diabetes, and asthma. Most of these kids have lived up to their late 90s.  I was surprised that there are real surveys to prove these claims and overall I think the enrichment workshop motivated me to volunteer whenever I can.

BLOG POST #4 (LISA HUANG)

The workshop yesterday taught me that being a good citizen and giving would make me live a longer and healthier life. They’re less depressed, stressed, and have less diseases. I rarely do community service, but I think I should start volunteering more if this is the case. It seems that people who volunteer and enjoy doing it live more passionate lives. Dr. Stephen also talks about “unlimited love,” which I think is a very idealistic concept, but a good one nonetheless. He talks about how people should love sick people, people in hospital, the less fortunate, etc. Is it possible to even love strangers? He also brings up the point that forgiveness and self-control leads to happiness, which I agree with, and can personally work on. So from this workshop, I learned that I may not be living life life to the fullest, but I can start doing so by volunteering and making a difference.
