NY Times Project: Food and Resturants

For the project, my group decided on the topic of food because not only is it a necessity, but it is also a big problem for many college students. With no more free school lunches, everyone has to find someone to maintain their hunger while lasting the day. For this reason, there are many restaurants all around and with so many kinds of food, this vast treasure trove is all around us.

My articles were on the perfect chicken wing and how cuisine in China is changing. The perfect chicken wing is of course relevant because it is food, but also, the chicken wing is common to the point of making it a national food and the article makes very bold assertions while heightening the grilled vs. fried debate. Around the college, there are actually many places to get good chicken wings. Chinese cuisine is in America and has affected it in several profound ways, but now, Chinese cuisine is evolving. It is taking in new outside influences and mixing together with it while allowing them to coexist separately, but Chinese food is also trying new methods that would appeal to many other senses. This new and improved style may soon find its way to America. Manhattan has many places to eat Chinese food as well. Overall, these articles have helped increases my grasp of understanding of the world of food, and hopefully it was conveyed well to the other students.

NYT Blog: Consumer Technology

My group and I chose consumer technology as our theme. Our audience could relate to it and we all use some form of it where it be a computer, tablet, video game, or something else. We chose articles that related to this theme, by each choosing an article that appealed to our interest in consumer technology.

My role in this project was discussing how consumer technology on a national level is evolving. I also was responsible for the linking Baruch to our theme.

News literacy is extremely important. It is important to be aware with what is going on in the world. You can find current events on practically any topic that interests you.

Sororities and Fraternities-Tina Konchinski

This topic was important because it needs to be made aware that in these groups people are able to make connections with one another and make long lasting friends through college. Students who go to college want a good support system of friends and a sorority or fraternity can do that. Also they can encourage underage drinking and hazing. These dangerous acts should be made aware to students so they know what not to do and what to be concerned with. One of the articles I chose related to sororities because it talked about the discrimination of a student trying to get into the sorority. Although it is a good way to make friends, sororities can be very judgmental and put eligible students through hazing activities which are very dangerous. The second article talked about how because of the fraternity a boy lost his life due to alcohol poisoning. With many people together all the time, they pressure one another to go farther and farther and one student drank to excess and died.

NYTimes Project: Enviroment

Enviroment
by Roy Choi

My group for the New York Times project decided to tackle the topic of the environment on a college, city, national and international level. We knew just how important and prevalent the topic had become and were all eager to tackle the bountiful press coverage of the environment. We decided to distribute the workload evenly amongst all our group members in order to maximize efficiency and get the widest span of views we could attain. My articles focused on the new building of an environmental project within the city, the controversy behind hydraulic fracturing and the so-called “fertilizer war happening in Eastern Europe. I chose these topics because they seemed to cover a large field of environmental concerns currently going on in society. All of these articles were known to me beforehand and having at least some background knowledge in the various concentrations, I was able to be fully engaged with the articles and learn an amalgam of new information.

I found the topic of the environment to be especially exciting because of this new craze to “go green.” As a Boy Scout, and a mild environmental enthusiast, I’m both excited and proud that sweeping changes are occurring on not only a global scale, but also on a national and city level. I was especially fascinated by the arguments introduced in the article of “fracking.” While it’s always seemed so clear-cut and dry, it was a new take on an otherwise controversial issue and has led to my taking a deeper concern into the environment and our jobs as stewards of the Earth; to not only be completely knowledgeable on all topics environmental, but to make sure to be involved in its affairs as well.

Blog Post 2 New York Times Project Reflect

We did our New York Times project on Food/Restaurants. We chose this topic because it relates to the students of of Baruch. We all love food and won’t pass up anything delicious . My article was for the state aspect of the project. It relates to our topic because i chose an up and coming restaurant in Hudson Valley that has being receiving a lot of attention. The project was interesting and I enjoyed working with my team. It became a little nerve racking when when we had to present because I don’t enjoy public specking. But other then that I had fun with this project.

Blog Post-izzle #2

We chose technology because its something we can all relate too. We are all addicted and guilty of spending way too much time on our phones and laptops. We chose our articles based on what interests us and what is current. Over all it was a good experience and we worked efficiently. Thanks.
