Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC04

LGBTQ club

The LBGTQ club was such a warm-hearted and welcoming club, they are extremely inviting. They have an LBGT history month where they do all sorts of things allowing people to be informed about the LBGTQ community and what actions they can do to help or if they need any help. The day that I went, the club actually met up in the lobby and had a march outside the campus which was very interesting and sweet. This club allows you to meet people and allows you to get out of your comfort zone. This club’s history month activities include of, open mic where people are welcome to come sing, do poetry, etc. Aswell as a meet and greet day, exploring the LGBTQ culture, the gay and lesbian corp concert and many more activities. These activities are up around the school if anyone is interested and also is posted on the Baruch student life page.

I don’t usually like clubs and the fact that this club made me feel so welcomed and not overly pressured to be a part of everything they are doing was very new and nice. Most clubs I’ve been to are very pressuring and this club doesn’t really want kids to “Fit in” with the crowd, they like uniqueness and want you to stand out, whether it be in the way you talk, you dress, your personality. This club is very welcoming and you don’t have to be gay, trans, bisexual, or even questioning your sexuality to join, you can simply join to be a part of the LGBTQ family.

A Visit to the Met

Besides going on field trips, I’ve never really gone to a museum for my own leisure. The last time I went to the Met was because my friends heard the chicken nuggets in the cafeteria were really good and we had to try them out for ourselves (they were 7/10)…

For this blog assignment I decided to go back to the Met and really take time to look at the art. I found it a pretty entertaining experience. What boggles my mind is the artifacts they have from hundreds, almost thousands of years ago. To have a piece of history that old, on display, physically in front of you, puts things into perspective. My favorite pieces to look at were oil paintings and anything that had a lot of gold.

One exhibition we looked at that really stood out to me was P.S Art. It’s basically an art exhibit full of drawings by about a hundred young students all over New York City. What made it stand out to me was that fact that in such a ‘serious’ art museum was this little exhibit appreciating kids’ art. It was kind of adorable.

While we couldn’t get through the whole museum in one day, I was fascinated enough that I just might stop by again to finish exploring. Seeing everything from ancient to modern art and artifacts is eye opening. Knowing a human hand crafted that clay vase, or wove that giant tapestry, hundreds of years ago gives you a feeling that is hard to describe. I liked it a lot. A lot of the art created a lot of interesting conversations between my friends and I which was nice.

This experience overall changed the way I thought of museums. I’ve always known they were interesting places to go but really would’ve never considered it myself. So I am glad I went. However, this time they didn’t have chicken nuggets.

Overall 8/10 experience. Would recommend.

The MOMA

I took a brief trip to the MoMA today. I’ve been here a couple times. It is one of my favorite museums. It is filled with Modern Art paintings and sculptures. With some installations as well.

It’s a lot more enjoyable to go to the MoMA then say the MET because it’s filled with art that was created in our era and it can be a lot more relate able than just old artifacts.

I would suggest the MoMA to anyone who is not particularly interested in viewing art galleries, as it’s a really fun experience that doesn’t require as much thought and walking around like the MET does.

Career Fair 9-15-17

The career fair was a very exciting experience. The event took place in both Baruch Gyms and had a large amount of both students and companies. I was able to converse with multiple different organizations and companies and find job listing specific too me. At first I was intimidated, I did not know what to say to the presenters from these big companies, but as I listened and eventually talked to some upper classman, I became a little more involved in what was going on. The students advised to remain cool and confident and try to start off with a brief summary of yourself and why you would be interested in a specific company. After a while it kind of became a second nature, going around to a majority the companies and stores present.

As I got to around to most of the companies, a few stores offered applications to some jobs and some even offered jobs on the spot. Although, I did not visit the fair with the intention of jumping straight into a job, I did contemplate it after receiving all of this new information. After the fair was over I had a whole list of companies to look up and even take into consideration for future job applications. It eventually lead me to open up my Starr account and there were even more job and internship opportunities on their website.

I recommend the career fair for every incoming freshman and even sophomores and juniors. It was a very eye opening experience that allowed me to gain the skills to portray myself as a professional individual. It also made me fix up my resume, for future job references. Overall, the fair allows students to learn to grow professionally while they are partaking in their individual studies. It can be very intimidating thinking about finding a job and working, but the career fair showed me that jobs and internships are readily available to students who are willing to commit themselves.

Career Fair on September 15th

The career fair I went to was so big. There were so many different companies in both of the gyms and there were also so many kids that were trying to get a job or an internship. When I was in line waiting to get into the gym, I was listening in to the conversations of those around me. There was a sophomore and a junior behind me talking about what they are trying to accomplish and what they want to do in life. I realized that I have no idea what I want to do and I didn’t know what to do when I got into the fair. Another fellow Baruch student came and stood with us in line and began to tell me that it is a good idea to get started as early as I could.

As I continued to talk to the upperclassmen, I began to understand how competitive the world really is and that I have to get myself together. One of the upperclassmen helped me get my 30 second pitch together and told me to target the smaller companies first and then work with the larger companies. I started off with approaching Uniclo. I felt very comfortable talking to the woman and ended up getting offered a job by her. Then, I tried to talk some other companies and found out that they do not take freshmen. It was an educational experience. I began to search up the different companies from the fair and tried to understand what each one has to offer.

This was a great experience because it helped me get more of a feel of how I am supposed to approach introducing myself and it also helped me want to get more involved. I think that everyone should try to go to a career fair because it is intimidating at first, but it an important experience to have.

Visiting MOMA

I was never really keen on visiting museums however, my cousin decided that she wanted to take me to the Museum of Modern Art one day. I was already sick of art because I take an extremely boring art history class. I walked into the Museum expecting it to be full of snobs but I was pleasantly surprised. There were many floors in this museum and each exhibit pertained to a specific time period or subject. One exhibit that I found very interesting was the architecture exhibit. Here you can find all the early sketches architects made for some of the most renowned structures. Moving onto painting and more colorful things one very famous painting that can be found at the Museum of Modern Art is Van Gogh’s Starry Night. To be honest, when I first went inside the Museum I had no idea what I would find. To see a Van Gogh painting right in front of me was actually really inspiring and made me really enjoy my time there.

This actually allowed me to appreciate my art history class and become interested in different styles of art. I think it is important to be interested what you are learning in order to be successful. Although my major has nothing to do with art it is a very admirable quality to be well versed in different subjects. I think it is safe to say that I have a new found respect not only for my art history class but museums in general.

Semir goes to MOMA!

Today I went to the Museum of Modern Art in NYC!  I normally would not go to a museum for fun, however, when I got my schedule and saw I had to take art history, I had to see what all this fuss was about.  Coming from the Bronx, the only kind of art I really knew about was music, especially form artists like A Boogie and Cardi B.  When I first stepped in to the museum, the piece of art that really caught my eye was “Starry Night” painted by Vincent Van Gogh.  This was a very interesting piece for me to see because I always heard about it in previous art classes from high school, and to actually see it is a cool thing to do.  I am not a huge fan of art, but when my friends told me they were going, I figured I had nothing to lose, and maybe I would even enjoy it, and look into art a little more.  That never ended up happening, but it did help me appreciate art, and made me a little bit more interested in my art history.  There was this one exhibit where they had a movie about space and air crafts, and that was interesting because I never expected a museum to have those kind of visuals, and it was something different from just looking at paintings on a wall.  The museum was also very empty, and there was lots of space left between each work of art, and that really helped emphasize the art works, and it wasn’t overcrowded with people which really allowed me enjoy everything for the little time I had.  I would really suggest checking out any museums you can if you are ever in the city because there really are cool things that you may discover!

Visit to the MOMA

Wilkens Telisma.

This was my first visit to the MOMA and was amazing. I anticipated the experience to be fun because I was going with friends, but the museum itself was fascinating. There was a vast amount of diversity, so many different exhibits and styles of Art. There was so much that I was unable to visit every exhibit. I went to the MOMA expecting to be wowed by stary night and Picassos and of course I was, but I was surprisingly intrigued by this picture…

I love the contrast between dark and bright colors, it just captured my attention. It seemed to me that there is a profiled portrait of a man on the canvas, it just saw happened that I was the only one who saw it that way. This is another reason why I loved this piece, it can be perceived in so many different ways every time I look I find another possibly recognizable object. Sadly it slipped my mind to take note of the title and artist, but it is an amazing piece. Although it was quite enjoyable to look at this piece the most thought-provoking piece was this sculpture…..

Pardon the caption but that was the first thought that popped into my head when I saw this. It was simply the most interesting and confusing piece of art that I’ve ever seen, and there will always be something to say about it. This visit will help me not only in my first semester at Baruch but throughout my entire future because admiring and acquiring knowledge on art is an essential part of being a properly cultured individual. It always helps to have something thought-provoking to talk about in any situation one may find themselves in. Whether it’s hanging out with friends or interviewing for an internship, and If that topic just so happens to be art it will immediately elevate your stature in the eyes of the person you’re conversating with.

Moran, Alejandro- Pre-Calculus Tutoring

I recently attended an after-school tutoring session for my Pre-Calculus class. I have an upcoming test in a few days and I figured it wouldn’t hurt to get some extra help. This session helped me get clarification on the topics I was still confused about. Sometimes, it is difficult to keep up in class, taking notes and listening to the professor, and so it becomes difficult to grasp on to certain topics. This session allowed me the freedom to ask the professor any questions I had on previous topics we had finished in class.

I would definitely recommend these tutoring sessions to anyone who feels like they’re not keeping up in class. The sessions are about an hour long and they truly are helpful. You don’t have to worry about holding the class’ time up and you can also easily communicate with the professor during these sessions. I definitely look forward to any future tutoring sessions because I know that they will only benefit me.

PreCalculus Tutoring ( Academics) Matthew Yan

I attended a workshop with SAAC Tutoring Center for Precalculus. The purpose of attending this workshop was to review for my upcoming precalculus test. During the workshop the instructor went over a review sheet which consisted of different sections such as solving functions, depreciation and graphing equations. I enjoyed this workshop and found it very helpful because the instructor was diligent in explaining the review questions and helped me prepare well for my exam. In total, the workshop lasted an hour, but it felt much shorter because time flies when you are having fun. This was my first time going to a tutoring workshop, so I was unsure what to expect. There were about ten other people that attended that I did not know. But the instructor was very patient and intelligent so I felt comfortable asking questions. In the future, I would recommend going to tutoring sessions to my friends and will attend more tutoring workshops in the future because they are helpful.
