Food For Thought

Today I attended the first activity amongst many within National Suicide Prevention week at Baruch College.  The activity was called food for thought.  The activity involved free breakfast in return for giving email information in which to receive emails to find out ways to help prevent suicide.  During this activity I received multiple breakfast treats as well information for further outreach as well as educational events that are planned during the National Suicide Prevention week.  I also took part in their “What were you made for” event.  The beginning of this event involved writing down what we were made for.  I wrote down that I was made to live happily.  These messages show people contemplating suicide that their are plenty of reasons to live and there is no reason to take their own life.  These little notes are posted on the wall by the student life center.  Part of the information i received was a schedule describing all of the events planned for the National Suicide Prevention week.  On Tuesday there will be tables set up during club hours where students can learn more about suicide prevention as well as resources on and off campus.  On Wednesday at four in the afternoon there will be a meditative reflection led by instructor Tanuja Ramchal geared to recenter and ground oneself.  On Thursday during club hours there will be tables set up providing free pizza as well as a panel discussion on mental health and how factors such as academics, cultural background and social media effects a person’s mental health.  The last event of National Suicide Prevention Week will be Thursday at five in the afternoon at the second floor lobby.  Hear there will be a candlelight vigil, where 121 candles will be displayed in memoriam of the 121 American’s that commit suicide everyday.
