Blog Post #1 Victoria Douglas (Student Life)

Since I am a new student at Baruch, joining a club didn’t sound like a bad idea. Meeting and talking to new people is something that is actually out of my comfort zone, which is mainly why I thought it would be a good idea to go out and explore all the different clubs at Baruch.

I planned on going to the club festival, which was supposed to take place in the main gym the first Friday of school. I went there with two friends, Leslie and Salma, after class. The fair was supposed to start at 12:30, so we waited around for about half an hour. After waiting and waiting, nothing was happening, and we decided they had moved the club fair to somewhere else.

Leslie and I went to the Newman Building, where there was a lot of activities going on. People were swarming the second floor, so we assumed that this was the Club Fair. We walked around, speaking to three different groups: The Baruch Health Center, USG, and KPMG. We mainly spoke to KPMG, which is what I would like to talk about.

KPMG was looking for accounting majors who wanted an internship with them junior year. I told the woman I was speaking to that I was an undecided major, so she decided to talk to me more about KPMG, saying that I had plenty of time to choose my major, and that she hoped I would pick accounting. I learned that KPMG does things like audits, taxes, and gives advice for investments and such. They had a step-by-step pamphlet on how to get an internship with them, which basically consisted of applying for the internship, getting accepted, and then doing the internship.

The whole concept was really interesting to me, because it was like your whole future could be planned out through a few simple steps. The woman was really nice and gave me her card along with a KPMG fidget spinner and a pop-button to stick on the back of my phone (this was by far the most useful thing I got). Leslie and I also got highlighters, paper tabs, axe body spray, a stress ball, and a pen from USG. If It weren’t for the long line, we would’ve gotten a t-shirt, too.

During this whole time, we really thought we were at a club fair. Turns out we weren’t, and they just so happened to have a ton of stuff going on. I’m not really sure what happened to the club fair, or when it’s going to happen, but I still had fun at whatever kind of fair this was. When they do reschedule the club fair, though, I plan on going. I know it’ll be a good way for me to make friends and find something I actually like doing at Baruch.
