The role of Gaia in HESIOD, THEOGONY
“Chaos was born first and after it came Gaia
the broad-breasted, the firm seat of all
the immortals who hold the peaks of snowy Olympos,
and the misty Tartaros in the depths of broad-pathed earth
and Eros, the fairest of the deathless gods;”
“She gave birth to the tall mountains, enchanting haunts
of the divine nymphs who dwell in the woodlands;”
THEOGONY is story from the beginning of the gods to the age of Zeus. When I read these two paragraphs above, I feel that the writer emphasized that Gaia who is the beginning of the god and who gave birth to Chaos. Not only these paragraphs, when the writer mentioned Gaia he often used expression that stressed ‘Childbirth’ such as “the gods born of Gaia and starry Ouranos,”, “the children born to Gaia and vast Ouranos and of their offspring”, and “Gaia now first gave birth to starry Ouranos,”. In my opinion, role of Gaia is pretty crucial in this reading because she is considered as the very beginning of the gods.
