Tomi Lahren’s Rhetoric

Tomi Lahren has recently become a popular figure in Right wing media. Although many “liberals” will know immediately that what she is saying is not only fictional but also hypocritical, her videos and tweets tend to gain a lot of popularity with “conservatives”. So why are people on one side so convinced by her arguments? You can credit this to the way she expresses what she believes to be true.

Tomi’s rhetoric, or how she persuades people, is convincing even when she knows that she is being a hypocrite and providing false statements about topics she has no understanding of. This is because she is able to discuss her point of view and beliefs in a way that appeals to her followers. It is easy for her to jump online and post a video making false statements about liberals, protesters, women, Muslims, the LGBT+ community and black lives matter because most of the people that watch her videos are people not associated with those communities, therefore, they don’t understand how they are discriminated against. An example of Tomi and her followers not understanding can be seen in the image I attached of her interview with Trevor Noah. Once Tomi realized her way to get a job in mainstream media was to feed into her own and other conservatives beliefs, she continued to make videos to gain a following.

To close with a different point: the sky may be blue, but there are people that will continue to believe it isn’t because they will benefit from ignoring it. People will continue to ignore the mistreatment of others in our country because it will never negatively effect them. These people, like Tomi, will do all they can in their power to convince people that their truth, their values, and their beliefs, are the most important, even when they claim that they believe in freedom.
