Occident

The word: “occident” originates from the Latin verb “occidere,” which means “going down, setting”–in reference to the sun. The word “occidentem” refers to “the western sky,” as in the “part of the sky that the sun sets.” Today, we understand that it simply refers to the western hemisphere or the western world.
