Kama
Kama, together with Dharma, Artha, and Moksha are four goals of human life in Indian. The word kama means “desire”, the affection and aesthetic enjoyment of life. Kama can also refer to the emotional attraction such as love. In Sakuntala, kama is clearly shown through the king’s affection towards Sakuntala. He has fallen deeply in love with Sakuntala the first time he met her.
“Her lower’s lip as red as a fresh young bud,
Her arms are tender shoots, supple yet trim,
And like a longed-for blossom, gathering strength,
Youth pushes up through all her limbs.”
…
“Even this threat enhances her charm”
Even though it was just the first time he saw her, nothing could explain how he fall deeply in love. All his words for her are praising and beautiful. Sakuntala, in the king’s eyes, is beautiful more than any women.
