Signage Project Analysis

Xin Lin

The signage system I chose for my final project is Ads in train. Before I started to design, I browsed through good amount of Ads post inside of train cars. For this particular system, the most important part was being attracted. Most of them used bright or high contrast colors combination in order to make them look more attractive. My signage system adapted this idea, bright background colors contrasted with white and black letter to make it easy to read and grab the attention.

Most signage are designed to read fast, but in this particular system, the design should be more entertaining . I thought about when I was on train, I used to stare at random thing and space out. So why not play with my letters? Letter designing came into my mind. I tried to make the letters to present the meaning of the word. Most of them required people to look twice and find out the trick. I used two typeface, helvetica and baskerville, because they look good with the design.  The variety of typefaces, colors and playful letter design make the simple signage appear more interesting.

For the letter space, I chose it visually by comparing with different versions. Since they were belong to one system, I made all of them same letter space. The part took my most the time for this project was proportion, because I didn’t pay too much attention to it at first. After I finished designing, all the pages which have been copied from the first design were not in a nice proportion, so I ended up fixing pages one by one.

Illustrated Quote Analysis

For this project, I planed to use my motto” Live fast, die young, and have a good-looking corpse”.  However, when I found the picture I want to use, and tried to sketch the thumbnails, I noticed the quote may be too long for the design. So I cut the sentence off, and it turned out really nice. The most difficult parts of this assignment for are the type face and letter spacing. The color I decided to use for the letters worked well, but the letter spacing gave me a hard time. I tried several different spacing, and they either made it looks too messy or run all over the place. The type face I used was Bodoni book. I tried all the five typefaces and the different form of them before I decided to use bodoni book. This typeface matched well with my picture, a record. It iwa simple and the color made it stands out and harmony with the image.

Hang-lettering Analysis

The font I choose for this assignment is bodoni. The reason I choose it because I look easier to hand draw it. However, when I started my first name which is hand-drawing, I found it was pretty hard. Especially, the thin and thick relationship and letter spacing. I also noticed that every letter doesn’t have same size and spacing. The one gave a lot troubles are letter “Y” and “N”. When I drew N, it was much more narrow than the standard size, and I had struggled a while to get the right letter spacing for Y. Each letter has it’s own characteristics, and I need to exam it carefully before I start.

The most important thing I learn from this project is that things that look easy may not be that easy. I spent a about 4 hours to finish the whole assignment. I had to redo few times become the baseline wasn’t  horizontal or I didn’t pay attention to some minor errors. This gave me a lot of ideas about typographic. Learning the differences of fonts and drawing them by hand gave me more deep understanding of letter spacing, lettering and other elements. Those stuffs make huge difference between excellent design and bad design.

Lin. What is graphic design?

Xin Lin

The article gives an overall summary of graphic design. When people talk about graphic design, the first thing pops into my mind is logo design or web design. I have always considered graphic design as a art major. But after I read through this article, I realize graphic design is a problem-solving technique which apply in large categories of life. It’s not just about logo or web designing, it goes more deep into user experiences and personal needs in daily life.

The question I want to ask the author is: Since there are so types of design jobs, does a graphic designer have to pick her/his career path in college? I think it would be really hard to transfer from production designer to web designer. So for people who really want to have a career as a graphic designer, they should know the specific designer they wants to be and take skill courses in college.
