Final Project Analysis

When I first began the project I had in mind to design a subway advertisement. It was a very tedious task for because I was stuck on the technical parts of indesign and photoshop. This project required us using everything we have learned thus far in class. I guess my problem was sticking to a specific design because we had so many choices. After numerous tries i decided to incorporate the “i” of iPhone because we rely so much on technology now to go throughout our day.

I decided to imitate the iPhone alarm clock and recreate it with colorful words and the times that I do each thing. I left a lot of white space to focus more on the words and to show the simplicity of iPhone. I tightened the letter spacing in the alarm times so it can seem more as an alarm. In the last word Run, I used more letter spacing to vividly show running. This project was the most challenging for me to complete, but I am very satisfied with the end result.

Illustrated Quote Analysis

The design approach that I had in mind when starting this project was to use a full bleed and emphasize on certain words with the quote on top of the image. However after many tries I noticed that the design wasn’t satisfying. I choose to zoom into the picture and center it with the quote curving to the man’s hands to really show how uplifting the quote is. The typeface I used was Bodoni Book Italic because it seemed soft and fittingĀ to my quote. Designing this project taught me to look more into details of how a word positioned in a certain way can affect someones view of it. Now I pay closer attention to the negative spaces, typeface, and contrasting in words and images.

Typeface Analysis

As the professor mentioned this was a very tedious task to compete. However, practicing drawing these letters changed the way I look at letters. It made me pay closer attention to the details of each letter. I didn’t have a real reason in choosing Garamound, but I saw it was somewhat simple to do. Before starting the project I would notice where the letter was thicker and thinner. Also what was the a center and the d center of each letter.

The capital letters were much easier to draw than the lowercase letters because it was less measuring and more stems. The lowercase letters had three lines to be measured, which were the top height, middle height, and lower. I feel that my lowercase letters came out much better than my capital letters because I started to practice with the capital letters first. I also knew how to do the letter spacing better with the lowercase letters. Also with the lowercase letters I could draw the curves and serifs better.

Each piece I had to draw twice in order to perfect it more. Sometimes in the shading of each letter I would shade too much in the letter, therefore making it thicker and less similar to the original letter. This project required a lot of carefulness with each letter and made me appreciate typefaces even more. I find myself looking at each letter when reading something and analyzing the details, questioning myself how that style came about.

What is Graphic Design?

Katherine Ortiz

Before reading this article, my understanding of graphic design was how ads are created to be more visually appealing to the audiences. I never thought of how complex graphic design can be and it’s different sectors. It is interesting to know its different positions and categories. Designers have a much bigger role than I thought of in interactive designs. Wayfinding was something I had never heard of. It was very intriguing to know how each one sign or symbol in a building is actually part of a much larger system within the building and each well thought to be incorporated into one.
Some questions I have for the author are is it difficult to get a position as a graphic designer? I believe that the demand for graphic designers is very high, but companies are not looking for a typical designer therefore making it harder to land a job. Another question, is wayfinding highly demanded by companies? I can see wayfinding probably being used in big companies such as Coca-Cola or Pepsi with their sub brands, but not really being used in smaller companies. What are the procedures to get a typeface licensed? Being that there are so many typefaces, I feel that it would be harder to create one and for it to be considered legit.
