Illustrated Quote Analysis

For this project we were directed to overlay a quote on an image, both of our choice. I chose a favorite quote of mine and chose an abstract painting as my image. I had toyed around with the idea of using a more literary image, of a broken glass or rose, but chose to keep the background and text simple to highlight the quote itself. I played around with the text placement, choosing to put a white box behind the text to help it pop from the busy background. For the font I chose Helvetica, a long time favorite although a bit overused at times. I increased the letting, attempting to help the letters stand out from the other elements. All in all I am confident with the result and look forward to creating more!

Hand writing Analysis

For the hand writing analysis we were directed to choose a font that we felt was relevant to the statement we had randomly chosen. With my phrase being “the dashing” I felt Garamond was most fitting. Garamond, the original typeface, is classic and, some would say dashing. It gives the feel of a classic style typeface while being presented in a more modern setting, along with my nickname “nikki f”.

This project helped me to understand the complexity of Garamond. With varying serifs and letter sizes I was able to better understand this old style text. The K’s were specifically difficult for me, with their unusual size and letting. I was confident with my project and hope to learn more about the five typefaces.

Handwriting Analysis

For this assignment I pulled “the dashing”, which has an air of class and is reminiscent of an earlier era, for this reason I chose garamond, for its creation in the 16th century. Garamond has a certain elegance to it, with slightly concave serifs and exaggerated letters such as the extra long K. The typeface itself was a bit more difficult to draw freehanded, due to the varying lengths and serifs, I had more trouble with the K’s than any other letter. I do feel confident in my choice of garamond, and resulting piece. This exercise helped me to notice the small details within garamond that set this specific typeface out from the rest/
