Final Project Analysis

Joo Ae Lee

For final project, I decided to create a brochure. I didn’t hesitate to pick ‘opening ceremony’ as my brand because they had their own signature logos and colors, and I thought it would be easy to show in the brochure. Nevertheless, I had hard time designing the brochure because they pursue for basic and plain designs. Their signature colors are black and white but when I first used those colors for the cover page, it seemed really simple. So it didn’t seem consistent whenever I tried to add more colors to next few pages. Therefore, I used yellow and blue for all pages and made them as signature colors for my brochure. I used Helvetica for all heads, headers and captions. However, I tried to differentiate them by reducing sizes and increasing weights. All heads are boldest out of all letters and I used different sizes for subheads and captions. I also didn’t use light yellow for color because it would have readability problem. I tried to use all the techniques that I’ve learned for this class and corrected the flaws that I had before. It was challenging to create eight pages brochure out of all projects but I really enjoyed creating one

Illustrated Quote Analysis

When I first picked my quote and looked for the images, I wanted use a water pastel painting. So I looked for the one that’s suitable for my quote, “If you would be loved, love and be lovable”. My image has a man and a woman, and they are tangled with his beard and her hair. I chose this image simply because the picture shows that they are falling in love.

At first, I decided to use the whole image so I placed the quote on his shoulders so that it could be surrounded by him, and I emphasized “love and be lovable” by giving contrast of texture. The sizes, fonts, colors, forms were different and I even used contrast of direction. But I felt like this image needed more stories. Then I cut out the image with triangular shape and placed it all together. However, this time I duplicated the images of woman and placed it next to each other so that they are both tangled with the beard. It looked like two women are fighting over a guy to get his love. Then I reduced the opacity of the image because I wanted the quote to be stand out. I also used contrast of texture for each word. However, it was hard to read because each letters had different fonts and structure. It would’ve been better if I used bold typefaces and black colors rather than pink.

The variations of images gave me hard time to pick because one image gave different atmosphere for each art piece by placing the quotes and images in different ways. Also the contrast of words provided more choices of using the words and how to organize them.

Hand-writing Analysis

Joo Ae Lee

When Professor Klein gave us a brief explanation of this project, I thought it would be a piece of cake because it was just simply tracing the letters and draw freehand. Therefore, I haven’t given much thought to pick the typeface. Since my name only contains five letters and my adjective ‘spiritual’ didn’t seem difficult to write, I thought I could write with any typefaces so I simply picked Baskerville. However, after I started to write these letters, I regret choosing it. If I get a chance to pick other typefaces, I would probably pick Helvetica.

Since Baskerville contains greater contrast between thick and thin, it wasn’t easy to just trace the letters. Even if I used tracing pads to trace, its thick and thin relationship made me hard to follow along the letters so I had to keep practice to figure out which part of the letters are thick and thin. My first name has two ‘O’s and drawing them was the hardest part out of all letters because its top and bottom were thinner than the sides. Not only the ‘O’ but lower case ‘a’ was tough to draw because of its bowl. I also never knew that the bracketed serif such as ‘t’ and ‘u’ would be this hard to follow along. Even though the brackets were clear and serifs were flat, I kept drawing outside of its shape. Therefore, I thought it might’ve been better to choose sans-serif typefaces.

The letter spaces and line spaces were also important in this project so I tried to give even spaces between letters and the leading but it was harder than I thought. The adjective ‘spiritual’ had nine letters and it was not easy to keep the same distance for each letters. Therefore, I traced them carefully so that I won’t make any mistakes by extending the exterior shape. This project was a challenging task for me because even if I pay attention to every detail of letters and practice with a lot of drafts, I still couldn’t get the perfect shape.

What is Graphic Design?

Joo Ae Lee

After reading this article, I realized that graphic designs are omnipresent and we are living along with them. Not only the advertisements that we see every day on the train but also the exhibition catalogs or brochures we can simply get in the museums could be different forms and images of graphic designs that designers are using to convey information to audience whether it’s fixed or creative contents. Since we are accessible to various types of media nowadays, we are easily exposed to the new information and trend, and marketers are using this as a tool to communicate and reach the consumers. It totally blew up my mind because I thought people are using artistic designs just to promote and advertise the products or contents. However, it is a form of communication that can be done without any direct contact with people.

Nevertheless, I was questioning myself with this kind of communication. Since graphic designers won’t get a chance to explain their works and arts to audiences, these designs could be easily judged by consumers. The results could be successful if consumers felt the advertisements were good enough to buy the products, however, they could have bad experience after using them. What could have been done to improve their communication with consumers? How would they know what audiences really want? To satisfy and reach the minds of consumers will be the hardest part out of all this process, but it is also the most essential thing to know what they want and apply it to designs.
