“Spit and Passion” – Cristy C. Road

“I had found myself. I think all I did that whole summer was find myself over and over again” (Road 51). Cristy C. Road expresses her love of Green Day and punk rock for helping her embrace her identity of being Queer and giving her the time she needed to accept and explore her identity without being judged or feeling “different”. Similar to Cristy, I also found myself once I discovered DPR IAN, an Australian-Korean singer and director who sings about the ‘highs’ and ‘lows’ of having bipolar disorder. We often feel trapped or terrified coming to terms with who we are or how we are feeling, but once we have something we can hold onto and that gives us a reason to be ourselves, we finally have a sense of security and acceptance. That is why in my collage, I show the world of darkness vs. the world of color through the different alters DPR IAN expresses through his music. This world of ‘darkness’, also known as MITO, is where many of us feel terrified of who we are becoming, where we feel like we lost a part of ourselves, at the lowest points of our life, or where we feel misunderstood. But when we have a small taste of happiness and hope or experience the high points of our life, we transcend to the world of ‘light’, also known as insanity, where we feel invincible, like we’re dreaming, or childlike. So, just like how Green Day helped Cristy come to terms with herself, DPR IAN helped me come to terms with my identity too. “I had found myself” (Road 51).

  1. I really enjoyed your collage Lesly. Not only did it stand out to me but I also really liked the whole meaning behind it and because of that I definitely feel that it gave the collage more depth than it already had. The transition that you had from talking about your collage to your favorite artist, and back to the book spit and passion was done really well.
