In time the little boy went to join his father in the palace. He was turning out to be so handsome that he hardly seemed of this world at all, and for the Emperor this aroused a certain dread. The next spring, when he was to designate the Heir Apparent, he longed to pass over his elder son in favor of his younger, but since the younger lacked support and since in any case the world at large would never accept such a choice, he desisted for the boy’s sake and kept his desire to himself. “He could hardly go that far,” people assured one another, “no matter how devoted to him he may be.” The Kokiden Consort was relieved. (Tale of Genji page 9)

This passage comes from the first chapter of the book after the death of Genji’s mother. I chose this passage because I thought it was an interesting insight to the culture of the time. When it’s mentioned that the emperor developed a “certain dread” it is a cultural reference to “people believing that supernatural powers coveted unusually beautiful people and tole them.” Another reference  would be the emperor not having the ability to name Genji as his heir. It must feel horrible to be the man in power yet in some cases have no power.

My question being that with all these cultural references in the Tale of Genji, how do you perceive the culture of the time.

Jacobean Drama-Saw

For this particular assignment I chose a favorite movie series of mine Saw.

IF YOU ARE SQUEAMISH OR EASILY DISTURBED DO NOT CLICK THIS VIDEO.

The premise of the saw movie is a game, a very sick game. This game is the creation of a serial killer named Jigsaw. The whole movie is about the torture that Jigsaw forces people through such as in the film that I have posted above. In one of the victim of Jigsaw’s games is a girl named Amanda. On her head is a mask which is hooked onto her lower jaw, there is a timer and if show doesn’t unlock the mask before the time runs out, her lower jaw will be ripped wide open. The key to that mask is however is in the digestive tract of her cell mate who is paralyzed on the other side of the room. She lives however her cell mate does not. The entire premise of Jigsaws game is to have someone do the killing for him. His reasoning is that most people are ungrateful to be alive however the person who survives his game wont be.

The movie is Super Jacobean in my opinion. It’s cynical like the way we see it in the Duchess of Malfi. We see most of the killing done in the hands of Bosolo however it’s usually under someone else’s request. Jigsaw is the game master, he will set up the game in a way that someone must die. Another very Jacobean aspect of Saw is the sheer amount of gore in it. In particular, one of the main puzzles Jigsaw sets up is he has 2 guys saw off their own ankles with a rusty saw. The concept Jigsaw provides is something that I really feel is Jacobean. I feel like it’s extremely morally wrong to put someone through murder and near death to prove to them that they should be grateful about life.

Jay Chou: Dao Xiang 稻香 vs. In the Quiet Night

In the Quiet Night

The floor before my bed is bright:

Moonlight– like hoarfrost– in my room.

I lift my head and watch the moon.

I drop my head and think of home.

The poem to me depicts a man who is lonely at night and misses home. I also know this from prior knowledge as I have studied the Chinese version of this poem in the past. The back story to this poem resides in a poet who has traveled very far in search of happiness and knowledge. This poem expresses the poets feeling as he looks at the moon. The moon being something that is a constant at night and this reminds him of the same moon he saw at home. The message that I got from the poem is that no matter how much you see or where you are in your life you will always remember home and the feeling it brings.

Jay Chou: Dao Xiang 稻香

If you have too many complaints towards this world
When you fall down you don’t dare to continue walking forward
Why must people be so weak, depraved
I ask you to turn on the TV and see
How many people bravely do their best to continue walking for life
Shouldn’t we be content with what we have?
You should cherish everything even if you don’t possess it

I still remember you said your home was the only castle, you continue to run along with the fragrance of rice and the flowing river
Smiling, the dreams when you were young, I know
Don’t cry, let the fireflies lead you to escape, folk songs in the country, you can always rely on them
Just go home
Go back to the happiness at the very start

Don’t be so easy to give up, it’s just like I say
For dreams you can’t achieve, switch it for another and it’ll be fine
Put some colour into your life, firstly paint the colour you like on love
Come on and smile, merit and fame aren’t the goals
Let yourself be happy, this is what you call meaning
The paper airplane from my childhood, it’s finally flown back to my hand now
That so called happiness, running barefoot in the fields chasing dragonflies and getting tired
Picking fruits without permission and getting scared from being stung by bees, who’s sniggering?

I lean on the scarecrow while being blown by the wind while singing while sleeping
Oh oh, in the afternoon the sound of the guitar is clearer among the buzzing of bugs
Oh oh, if the sunshine sprinkles on the road then I won’t be afraid of being broken-hearted
You should cherish everything even if you don’t possess it

I still remember you said your home was the only castle, you continue to run along with the fragrance of rice and the flowing river
Smiling, dreams when you were young, I know
Don’t cry, let the fireflies lead you to escape, folk songs in the country, you can always rely on them
Just go home
Go back to the happiness at the very start

I chose this song because it gives a similar message to my interpretation of the poem. This song for me clicked really well with the poem. The setting of the poem has like almost an ominous feel to it, almost upsetting. This is very well reflected about the hardships written in the songs. Moving from the eerie aspect we reference the moon from the poem. To me the moon references this thing that reminds the author of their childhood which is reflected by the fragrance of rice in the song. Lastly, I think is the main point that connects them both which is the sense of home. I think that both the song and the poem reflects the strong Chinese value of home. Home is where the heart is at and when you are down that is where your thoughts go.

Student Introductions: XiaoYang Wang

Hi my name is XiaoYang Wang but you can call me James. I am from Plainview, Long Island but I currently living in Astoria. I am a junior who is majoring in finance and minoring in Chinese language studies. My favorite book has a lot to do with my interests actually, the book is called Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain  The specific interest I’m talking about is my love for cooking. Some other interests include power lifting, hiking and fine dining.

Something that confused me in Paul Jay’s text:

One claim that is often made against the changes ushered in by the transnational turn in literary studies is that it has led to a debilitation fragmentation. Principles of coherence that have guided the field for decades have given way to a focus on pluralities, differences, hybrid identities, and complication transnational geographies that are seemingly incoherent and unmanageable. I do not agree because I believe that literary studies as a field has always thrived on fragmentation and challenges to coherence.

This part of the text confuses me in several different way. First way being that it does not specify how transnational literary studies cause fragmentation. From what the author previous mentioned that “globalization is characterized by a complex back-and forth flows of people and cultural forms” then the idea should be relatively coherent. Secondly is that I wished the author had clarified the meaning of coherence. In my opinion coherence can be developed in more than one method so I am left wondering what the “Principles of coherence” actually are. All in all this was an interesting read about Jay’s view on transnational studies in literature.
