One of the quotes that stood out to me the most is, “Grumbling, she set to work, not suspecting the booby trap I’d placed ready for her. “Soon she found the long scar familiar to her from the many, many times she performed the same servive for Odysseus” (140). It was suprising to find out that Penelope had acually planned Eurycleia to wash Odysseus. She used Eurycleia to find out about Odysseus identity. This quote is also suprising because Penelope has been innocent all along but in this quote she sounds deceiving.
Question:
Penelope suspects that Eurycleia chose the twelve girls to die because she wanted to keep her position with Odysseus and the maids were a spy for Penelope.
In your opinion, what is the reason Eurycleia chose the twelve girls to die?

Duchess of Malfi and Taken
Throughout the play The Duchess of Malfi presents revenge, nobility, strength, gender roles, power, social order, death, family, friendship, betrayal, corruption, cruelty, jealousy, murder, class, ethics, norms, desire, obsession, and torture. These various characteristics represent the characters in the play or they are mechanism that is used by the characters to fulfill their desires which eventually bought corruption in the land at the end of the play.
One particular 21st century movie that I thought is related to the play is the movie called Taken. The movie is about a Bryan Mills who is a CIA and a father to a seventeen year old daughter Kim who lives with a wealthy stepfather and her mother Lenore. The second and Third parts of the movie are best related to the Duchess. In the second part of the movie Kim and her mother join Bryan to Turkey. The second day while the two couples were taking a walk without Kim they got kidnapped by the Albanian Gangsters from the first movie seeking revenge to kill him and his family. The father eventually tells Kim to seek help from US Embassy. Meanwhile, the Mobsters are torturing his wife and told Bryan to watch while she bleeds. After much Torture, Bryan finally fights and kill the Mobsters and went back to save his wife. At the end the movie Bryan confronts Murad (killer) who tells him that if he kills him his two sons will revenge. Therefore, Bryan decided not to kill him and when he walked away Murad tried to kill him which shows that he cannot be trusted. In Taken three, Lenore who divorced Bryan asked him to meet her which he eventually found her dead in his own house. Therefore, the FBI thought that he is the one who killed his own wife. Towards the end Bryan and FBI found that Stuart who is Lenore husband was the one behind the her murder.
This movie is a great comparison because it shows the family being tortured which also happen in Duchess of Malfi and It presents a non-stop revenge to the family. Furthermore, it shows betrayal, jealousy and violence from Lenore husband which happened with Duchess and her brothers.

The River-Merchants Wife Vs I miss You by Aaliyah
The River-Merchants Wife Vs. Aaliyah – I Miss You | |||||||||
The river Merchants Wife is a poem about a lonely wife who hasn’t seen her husband for five months. Therefore, she decided to write her husband a letter. In the letter, the wife recalls the first time that she met her husband while she was picking flowers. Then at fourteen is when she married him which seems like she is not happy about. At the age of fifteen is when the wife felt more settled in the marriage. Furthermore, at sixteen her husband went to work for five month and she can’t wait for him to come back home.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgrqam-_0vg The song I miss you by Aaliyah is about a relationship that has been apart for too long. Aaliyah sings it has been too long since she had seen one that she loves. Then she goes on singing how one has left her from high school and college and recalls their moment together. Then the song goes on how it has been too long and she misses him repeatedly and with hope she will see him again. Some of the lines that are related to me from the song I Miss You and The River merchants wife are. Off to college yes, you went away straight from high school you up and left me (I miss you) Vs. At sixteen you departed. You went into far Ku-to-e, by the river of swirling eddies, and you have been gone five month. (The river merchant’s wife) Both of this line shows how their love ones left them behind for a long time. The two statement shows that they’re sad because they’re left behind. Also what’s interesting about this lines is that both the wife and Aaliyah in the song were young when the husband left them. We were close friends Also lovers did everything For one another (I miss You) VS You came by bamboo stilts, playing horse, you walked about my seat, playing with blue plums. (The river merchant’s wife) Both of the statements show how at young age the couples did everything together. They are couples and friends at the same time. It also show how much both women cannot let go of their past with the memories they had with their loved ones as children. Now I’m sittin’ here Thinkin’ ’bout you And the days we used to share It’s drivin’ me crazy (I miss You)
VS
The leaves fall early this autumn, in wind. The paired butterflies are already yellow with Augusts over the grass in west garden, they hurt me I grow older.(The river merchant’s wife) Both of the statements show how both women are sitting and waiting for their loved ones for a long time and that time is passing as they wait. In I miss you lyric Aaliyah is fantasizing the days she used to share with her loved one which she holds still and thinking about her lost one all the time. The wife in the river merchants shows how time is passing by that the seasons are changing. She is also always thinking of her husband and fantasizing and going crazy to the point that she is jealous of the paired butterflies.

Student Introductions
My name is Fathia Adam and this is my first semester at Baruch. I am majoring in Entrepreneurship under Management major. My favorite book is Who Was Rosa Parks. On my spare time, I enjoy going to the park, drawing, reading, working, hang out with friends, and watching movies. I will like to own my own business one day so majoring in Entrepreneurship will give me a great start. Likewise, business will allow me to take risks and experience many different things which is exciting.
In my opinion, reading Jays text was very challenging because of the language and the vocabulary that the author has used. The authors statements that is still confusing to me is,
“We tend to link agency to culture autonomy and to measure culture autonomy in terms of a society’s ability to protect its culture identity from being watered down or erased by alien culture forms; but every culture is always shaped by other cultures, and agency has more to do with intelligent and imaginative negotiation of cross-culture contact than with avoiding such contact”.
What leaves me to question about this statement is the author argues that agency has more to do with intelligent and imaginative negotiation of cross-culture contact than with avoiding such contact. In my opinion, my understanding of agency is the ability to make one’s own decision so does the author mean that agency is still restricted to curtain extent because he described it to be imaginative?
