The Tale of Genji Discussion Leader

“Genji was suffering from a recurrent fever and had all sorts of spells cast and healing rites done, but to no avail; the fever kept returning. Someone then said, “My lord, ther is a remarkable ascetic at a Northern Hills. Last summer, when the fever was widespread and spells failed to help, he healed many people immediately. Please try him soon. It would be dangerous to allow your fever to become any worse.” Genjo sent for him, but the ascetic answered that, being now old and bent, he never left his cave” (Chapter 5, Page 87)

I choose this part because this quote show us the culture and medical teats of Japan back days. Genji was the one of the Top ranked aristocracy men in the story, because of his father. So, the treat that he was acquire would be the best treat to help him to fight against fever, and that treats are “spells cast and healing rites”(87) By this we can notice that the time that this story take place in, there was no actual and professional doctors or similars jobs. It sounds familiar for me in some way, because traditional Korean shamanism have similar tradition too. Back days, people believed that sickness is come from bad sprits or monsters, so they cast spell and do some rite fight against these things. Moreover they believed that the ascetic can help him.

One more interesting thing is that, the spell was failed before, as the servant mentioned, but why do they do same spell to him? They may have no other option than the spell casting?

Do your culture have similar tradition like this before? or have you ever heard this kind of tradition?
(Ascetic sound little like Merlin or that kinda Deus Ex Machina chactors for me.)

Jacobean style and Breaking Bad.

In my understanding, Jacobean era’s drama contains corruption, weird Family relationships and Violence.

So, I choose ‘Breaking Bad’ as a good example of Jacobean Drama. This is a TV show that shows us how person who have skill but normal life corrupted and become a mass producer of methamphetamine.

For corruption, Walter, the main Character was originally a teacher. He had no savings or any money that keep his family living after he pass away. At that point he met his old student who make a methamphetamine for his living, and so he started the ‘cook’ for money for the family. His first motive is very understandable, except he is making pure meth that may cause huge social problem and complex drug crime. Also he is not only making drug, but also force his old student, Jesse, to kill people for taking care of work, and also he kills some people in the TV show. So, this drama show us how the school teacher who worried about his family become coldblooded drug and homicide criminal.

For Strange family relationship, Walter and his wife’s sister’s husband are very close relationship as family. However, after Walter step into meth industry, it became very interesting but also weird, because Hank, the Walter’s wife’s sister’s husband is work in the Drug Enforcement Administration. Yes, professional drug producer and agent who have catch that producer is in one family, and moreover, they are still good family until season 4.

For the violence, ‘Breaking Bad’ shows us many violence seams. Specially, two hit man brothers entered to the show with brutal killings and one of them is shot to death and other one also death, but blood loss. These two characters are very significant criminal characters, but there is also many killing and death in the show, by not main characters but also by Walter and Jesse. If we include not only direct killing, but some second hand killings and let someone die for purpose, the killing count will be rise more. Yes we can see a lot of blood from this show.

Yes, it follows Jacobean drama’s many features.

Drinking Alone with the Moon and Cheongsan Byeolgok(靑山別曲, 청산별곡)

I would like compare ‘Drinking Alone with the Moon’ by Li Bo with Chungsan-Byulgok, by unknown writer.

Lyrics of Chungsan-Byulgok. (I can not find any English translated version of this song. So i just roughly translate it by myself. Sorry)

( I will live, I will live at the Blue Mountain)
(I will live at the Blue Mountain, by eating mountain barres)

(A bird is crying, right after it waked up, it cry. I have more concerns than birds, so i cry too.

(I just see the bird, a bird fly under the water. I hold my plow on my shoulder, i just see the bird fly under the water.)

(I just barely pass the day, but how can i endure the night that no one will visit me and i have no place to visit.)

(Why some one throw the stone, there is no hated one or loved one. Just one person got hit and cry.)

(I will live, I will live at the sea. I will live at the sea, by eating clams and oysters)

(During i just pass the old kitchen, i just listen the song. He-gum(Korean instruments) Song by a dear, dear on the top of a tall pole)

(When i get there, i found a pot of strong wine.                                                                          Just a pot of wine stops me, What should i do)

Chungsan-Byulgok is old Korean poem/song. This song have very similar feeling for me In both song/poem, singer experienced some hardness of life, pain or loneliness. So, in both poem/sing, they talk about what they want to have.

“and soon enough it will be Spring.” in the ‘Drinking Alone with the Moon,’ by Li Bo, This sentence show us how the singer feel. In this sentence he uses Spring, the new start of all nature and live. It may mean by drinking alone with nature, he feels refreshing and revive. However we have to think again, because before Spring(While he is drinking alone), season is winter. Season of end of year, cold and also death. So, before he start drinking, he should be lonely or he have some kind of problem makes him uncomfortable.  By drinking, he feels better, and in the last verse, he talk about what he want, “Let’s pledge-beyond human ties-to be friends, And meet where the Silver River ends.” This part may mean what the writer really want, friends without human ties.

Chungsan-Byulgok is a song about harshness of life, and Utopia. In this song/poem, The Blue mountain and the Sea are Utopia for the writer. By “(I just barely pass the day, but how can i endure the night that no one will visit me and i have no place to visit.)” and “(Why some one throw the stone, there is no hated one or loved one. Just one person got hit and cry.)” verses, we can easily notice the writer is very lonely and have a harsh life. So he/she want to live at the ‘Blue Mountain’ where he/she will not suffered by harsh life and loneliness. “( Just a pot of wine stops me, What should i do?)” this verse may mean he/she is suffered in their life and can not get to the Blue mountain, so they just drink wine and forget about harshness of life for a short time.

Writers from both poem/song have problem with life and may feels lonely. So, they made a song/poem about what they really want to have, Li Bo want to have a Friendship with out ties each other, and Chungsan-Byulgok writer want to live at the Blue Mountain and the Sea where he will not suffered by harshness of life and loneliness. It may not connected in sense of similarity of what they want, but i feel both of them are similar because they are both lonely and  want to have a things they don’t have.  Also wine make them forget about things make them suffer in both poem/song.

Student Introductions, Taehan Kim

Hello, My Name is Taehan kim.

I’m on the way to majoring the accounting at Baruch College. I don’t have really a favorite book in English, but i enjoyed some readings, such as Dumpster Diving, so some of books in my interests, “six thousand years of bread” in Korean translated version and some history books. I’m very interested in European History. I love history in general.

About Jay’s text,

“This turn, of course, has been a controversial on. my aim in this book is to explore the nature and history of these controversies. As some scholars define globalization as a contemporary phenomenon linked to the development of electronic media, the rise of transnation corporations, global financial institutions, and proliferating form of entertainment that easily leap national boundaries, others define it as a historical phenomenon running back to at least the sixteenth century and incorporating the histories of colonization, decolonization, and postcolonialism.”

I was some what confused why some people consider globalization as a contemporary phenomenon based on modern technology, because i understand “Globalization’ as a exchange of culture, goods, people and more in big scare. I also like to include some minor scare of exchanging in a part of globalization too, because many small exchange eventually change the society. So, In my thinking, Globalization have a history, at least since Imperialism ages, silk road trad between Europe and Asia, possible Macedonian, Hellenistic empire. Not big and past as today, but exist.
